It may be your computer. I made them on my laptop and they seemed a little dark (but legible), especially because of my screen; but when I checked them over on the PC they were fine. :)

they're dark on my screen, too... legible, but still dark.. but they match the layout really well and they're pretty, though I will be sad to part with my current officials icon (btw, did you make the icontest mod one yet?)..
