RP

So, as I'm finally giving into the sheer amount of you asking me:

Would you guys be interested in having an RP?

[Poll #1466340]

Two members are currently drawing up a proposal. Anyone else got anything to add? Want to make a comment to the people drawing up a proposal? Etc etc...

ETA: you all know I'm against one, I just need proof the community is to XD so many people ask for one.

I love RPing but am always reluctant to do so in places where I don't know anybody, so yes, I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED. One question, though - is there going to be a poll for what generation (Founders, MWPP, Trio, Next Gen, etc.) it's set in? Personally, I don't really care but I know there are quite a few people who have very strong preferences.

I kinda...really hate RP's I watched a small sorting community get ripped to shreds because of the drama that came with an RP and most of those members are members here.

Personally i think with the massive amounts of drama we already have it would just fuel more, but that is just me and i tend to be a pessimist

Potential drama: who plays what, it's not fair, I don't like how you do this.
+ too much Autarky: if certain members want to make an RP community, why don't they just affiliate in hogwartsishome and pimp it out a bit.
The HP fandom is dying, shouldn't concentrate on what we have already without making the community larger?

Agreed. RPs seem to fuel drama like nothing else, for some reason, especially when there are many people involved. :/

I know two people that DID try to start an RPG and they were pimping like crazy. Unfortunatly it didn't take. I was in that rp, so I was very dissapointed.

Why start another one, really. Is it b/c they didn't get any say in it?

I don't think starting an rp is a good idea, considering the amount of viciousness I've seen. There's far too much drama already. I can only seeing this being blown up into epic wank proportions. :(

As a somewhat experienced RPer, I would normally be the first to jump up and down with excitement about this.

But there is nothing that induces wank and drama and cliquishness faster than an RP. You only need to look at places like [livejournal.com profile] roleplaysecrets to see the amount of bitching that goes on.

You're opening yourself up to arguments over who gets to play whom and what era you'll be playing in (assuming this will be HP-based), an application system, a points system (and I pity the mod who has to count them)...

I love RP. But there are a MILLION communities available specifically for that, and we have creative outlets here with Sugarquill and Writersblock (in before "if you don't like it, you don't have to join").

I can see the pluses and minuses of it. On the plus side, it IS really fun to do collaborative artistic endeavors with people. It really is. I was a member of H_E's RPG and it was a great way to get to know members I would never have sought out on my own. The RP itself was fantastic and fun - we never had any drama that carried over into the main comm, etc etc.

HOWEVER, that RPG did NOT generate points for the members' houses; material there was NOT allowed to be transcribed, posted or anything to other creative subcomms within the main comm and there was a really stringent application process for each character involved.

With all that in mind, I think if there are indeed people who are very interested in starting up an RPG, I would like to see it begin as an affiliate and have it run a while before there's talk of integrating it into the community structure proper. There is a lot of potential for good times, but also a lot of potential for bad times - I think given the current undercurrent vibes within the community itself, I'd rather us focus on what we have than start adding on to a building with a possibly shaky foundation, as it were.

Personally, I would like to RP, but I don't think I'd want *an* RP, with a plot and all. I like the sort of threads that I posted occasionally at Hosgmeade, and something like that with more participation or over a greater time span could be a *ton* of fun.

But, reading the comments, it seems like other people have a lot of experience with RP causing wank, etc. I've RPed for years and that's never been my own experience, so I guess every fandom is different.

I really wish that we had more informaton on the RP that is being drawn up before being asked to vote on whether or not we'd want it. There could be a lot of things being addressed that would better answer people's questions and concerns about having one or not having one. Plus having more information gives people a better way to make an educated decision on this matter. However, I'm all for giving one a chance.

There's a lot of potential drama, but I do like RPs. However, I think it would be a great idea if we did something similar to what planetgal said. I'd like to RP but I don't want *an* RP.

How do you mean? Wouldn't numerous rp threads be *a* roleplay? What I mean is...even if you don't have a plot but you have a bunch of threads where people rp...isn't that a roleplay?

I'm not always big on plots simply because they lose steam, they're hard to manage and people sometimes have a tough time jumping into them once they've begun but having a rp doesn't necessarily mean having a plot.

Still, how would you organize it?

Date: 2009-10-04 06:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kilobites.livejournal.com
I don't think I explained myself particularly well, haha. I mean I don't want one specific plot, I would want numerous threads where people RP. And yeah, you're right, that is a roleplay, but it doesn't just rely on one overarching plot. I don't know if that makes any sense.

I'm not sure how that would be organized. I have to think about it more. And of course, if there ends up being an RP with a larger plot, I would still participate.

One of the ways I see it is that it's just another activity that you can be a part of. Someone mentioned that the fandom is dying and that we should perhaps concentrate on the activities that we already have. I'd agree if there was something wrong with what we have. Those activities are flourishing pretty well and I don't think that having one more would take any of the activity away from those. It would just be one more fun activity for people to take part in or choose from.

It's true that RP is potentially a breeding ground for drama but every activity is. Shops with better graphics are going to get more orders from people, right? One of the things that people seem to be worried about is drama because of who gets what character. What about strictly OC based RP that takes place during a time when no known characters are attending Hogwarts?

I did a three person RP with some people I know personally once and it caused SO MUCH DRAMA with one of the people involved. So yeah, RPs are fun, but there's already so much wank and drama in this community, that I don't think an RP is needed.

I like the idea of starting it off as just an affiliate, and then maybe integrating it later... or hell, just keeping it an affiliate! IDK, I'm too lazy to write HP fiction by myself, but RP always interests me more because it's like collaborative fanfiction. I wouldn't even care if we couldn't submit for points; I role play for the creative enjoyment, and always have. (:

BUT, if it doesn't come to fruition, hey, I RP two other places, so I won't cry too much. :P

Eh, uhhhh...

I feel fairly qualified to comment on this, owing to the fact that I'm on a site with a community roughly this size that is an RP. And honestly? I have never seen so much drama anywhere, and I really don't think the fact that there's a battle system has anything to do with it. Groups this size, in an RP...it just becomes so much of a headache to manage. (I've been helping run the thing for two years now and dear god the headaches.) It breaks down so that if you penalize one person for something but missed someone else for it they complain, even though you can't possibly read absolutely everything and...ugh.

Then there's the LJ RPs I've been on, which are just so many ticking time bombs waiting to explode at the most random moments. And yeah.

All that aside, I love RP, and would do one, just...not sure how well it'd work.

...depends on how it was run. I used to RP at [livejournal.com profile] campfuckudie, WHICH IS AWESOME, but it eats your life. T.T

If it was affiliated in name and had nothing to do with points (oh god), why not? Sounds fun, but I wouldn't join because of lack of time.

I like the few RPs I've been in, but maybe that's because they had really stringent applications, I don't know. I've never been a part of any drama, so I guess I'm not really qualified to say if it would be worth it. I'd RP, though, if it started. And if there was drama, I'd just leave, I guess. Though, actually... Yeah, I can see how there would be a lot of problems. Well, like I said. I'd be for it, but I'd suggest caution.

I remember people loving the RP and a seemingly equal number using it to fuel drama way back when. So... I'm torn. Fun things are fun, but HiH (myself included, people!) seems to be abnormally good at turning fun things dramarific. I don't think potential drama would be lessened by an affliate community (do we even still do that? points for non-HiH affliate comms?)

ANYWAY. I don't know what I think about RP, but you're listening to Dropkick Murphys, and I'm seeing them later this month, and it's going to be the BEST THING EVER I'M SO EXCITED. *cough* That is the "something else" I had to say.

I modded a couple of RPGs for years with different groups of people and considering how quick people are to jump on reasons for a fight around here, a RPG would not be a good thing. In my experience for every good RPer you have many more bad RPers, and by bad RPers I mean the ones who take every act against their character personally. One of the games I modded involved battle, and unless the RP group is tight-knit, it gets tricky, no matter how well-structured the guidelines are. If the members making a proposal want a game that badly, they should create one separate to this community to try to minimize the backwash of drama.

I don't overly like the idea of mixing this comm with an RP one, although I would be interested in RP'n with people from this comm, if that makes sense?
