BUT.

Would anyone be interested in having a chat based on The System? Where people would need their system log ins to access the chat, could only use their nicks, other stuff I haven't thought of?

I've been eyeing some pseudo irc stuffs.

So, would people be interested? We'd keep a copy of the logs inorder to try and cut down on trouble.

[Poll #1460177]

ETA: The idea would be you can have other chats wherever you want and advertise them as you like, but there'd be a chat on the system, that you could connect to using any of the irc clients you like, or a webbased one on the system.

I'm not looking to replace what you've got, just introducing a safer, more monitored area for people to chat that might not feel comfortable elsewhere.

Are these Screened?

Bleh. I don't mind.

Personally I like the fact we can talk freely on AIM cause it's neutral ground. I don't like the idea of an IRC that is on the system.

IRC is also completely shite.

I used IRC for years gaming and I still have mIRC on my laptop. I know what it is yet it still doesn't change the fact I don't like the idea of using it again. it's a personal thing

I've never used IRC, but I do like the idea of logs. There has been a lot of issues with AIM. I'm not saying that AIM should be outlawed or anything, because like Louise I like that I can talk freely on it. But I do think having a neutral ground where the chats are logged would be a great idea and I would probably learn how to use IRC just so I could chat there. C:

I pretty much agree with Liz. I prefer the AIM because of the freedom we have with it (that, and it's just plain convenient,) but some sort of webchat for the System would be nice to have a "safe zone" that's logged.

Plus, new members might feel more comfortable joining in chats when it's just a window they stumble across whilst exploring the System, rather than having to manually join AIM chats that are for the most part full of people who know each other and have their own little routine and inside jokes established already... I dunno if I said that right, but you get the gist!

Don't you think it would just turn into that over time though?

Chats have caused more harm than good within HiH, and it would just give you more wank to try and police. They would be logged so you could see what happens, but you would still have things happening and you would then have to deal with the things happening. Are you and Steph really prepared for fielding even more drama?

Man, I love this idea, except that I think policed chats would be more trouble than they're worth. And let's face it, even if you're just reading logs when issues come up, you're going to get enough requests to make modding chat at least one full-time mod spot.

Every time I've been on board-style chats that moved to include IRC style chats, there has been serious mod-ness needed. The one time it was an HiH-sized board, we needed about 10 "chat mods" and there were still people dropping out of the community all over because chat drama couldn't be dealt with fast/well enough.

Policed chats would cause major issues, is there a way to not have them logged?

Otherwise I love the idea.
I never can seem to find the chat room on AIM, that may be my incompetence or something but Claw Chat on IRC has never been a problem for me.

As for chat wank (which is absolutely silly) I'm of the mind that if ppl can't be adult about such things, enough to actually leave HiH then it's not really a problem for mods to police since it seems it may come out in other ways around the comm anyway.

Feel free to screen if this has potential wank written all over it.

I don't care. Okay, I don't mean it to sound as harsh and not-caring as it probably does sound, but I don't participate in chat.

However, I'm seconding [livejournal.com profile] planetgal471's concerns. I feel that it's going to generate more work for a mod to police, and the chat will either spread drama or be sorely underused (because nobody wants their drama logged - they'll just migrate to AIM/personal journals/etc.).

I find the answers surprising - I've joined houseunity fairly regularly this week on AIM and there was absolutely no drama at all. That being said, I think it's a shame that not more people are joining and if a chat on the System is likely to bring more HiH members, then I'm all for it. And I don't mind if my conversations are recorded.
Get some sleep, though, Sas :p

I honestly feel that a monitored chat won't work. You'll have a "safe zone" where the people who go on there will all walk on eggshells because they are monitored, and anyone wanting to start wank will go to their non-monitored chat rooms and PMs and the like. There is literally no way for you to watch everything, and if members have to be so immature as to hand out their (or their former, whatever) house's chat name to other members for the sole purpose of antagonizing other members, then maybe it's just a matter of isolating the problem members and not of isolating the chat itself. I don't know everything that went on over the last few days that I was offline, but what little I have heard has appalled me, and even if I DID hear the other side of it, I can't even fathom how this could be explained away as anything other than a vicious attack. Granted, I'd love to hear the other side of things, but I highly doubt anyone would have the cajones to admit they were the wrongdoer. *shrugs*
