So, I'm bored and curious...
Aug. 13th, 2009 09:31 pmAgain, see title.
So, is anyone named after anything? Be it cool or embarrassing?
Like, my name,Sas Sara is after Sara by Bob Dylan. Which is a lovely song. And my middle name, Elisabeth, is supposed to be after my nan, who my mum thought her name, Betty, was short for Elizabeth. Turns out it's not, she's just Betty.
So, anyone else?

Date: 2009-08-13 08:42 pm (UTC)It would've been fun, though, because my flat mate's sister is also Mia, and my flat mate has the middle name I should've had. I'm not going to name it BECAUSE IDK WHAT "JEWISH" MEANS.
Any way, I'm named after no one. My parents wanted a name that was easy to spell, pronounce in different languages and would fit with a second sibling, so I'm Mia Isobel. My sister's Rhea Ros. She's got an awesome name.)

Date: 2009-08-13 08:45 pm (UTC)The Kimberly was apparently the name of some soap opera actress that my dad thought was really pretty. Diane came from my grandmother insisting they name me after Princess Diana. Diane went better with the first name, thus, me.
My dad actually wanted to name me Barbara after this girl he went to high school with who became a nun. But my mother put her foot down. And to be honest, I'm glad. I like my name.

Date: 2009-08-13 08:49 pm (UTC)Also, I'm really glad, I'm not too fond of Barbara, it creeps me out when it's shortened to Babs, although, nun? coool!

Date: 2009-08-13 08:55 pm (UTC)I no longer go by that name. Now, my middle name is a nod to my parents because it is the other name they had chosen for me.
My first name just came to me one day, and I knew instantly that it was the right one. I didn't name myself after anyone, at least not consciously.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:00 pm (UTC)See, I kinda let all variations of my name sit by themselves.
Legally my name's spelt 'Sarah' because my father registered me and fucked it up. And recently I've had to spell my name like that, and, well, it doesn't feel like me, but I'm pretty sure Sarah's going to be an interesting person!
And now at work, they all started calling me Sa-rah, as opposed to Sair-ah, and I'm not sure who that person is either, but I'm kinda beginning to like her too.
That and my friends all call me 'Sas', I adore her.
It's subtle, and I'm sure a lot more subtle than your name change, but, yeah, it's enough that I'm kinda into it at the moment.

Date: 2009-08-13 08:56 pm (UTC)Nicole is just a name my parents liked, but my middle name, Rochat, was my maternal great-great grandparents' surname. There's some well-known chef in Switzerland named Phillippe Rochat, but I don't know if we're distantly related, because in Vevey, and I guess in the canton of Vaud in general, Rochat is as everyday as Smith or Jones.
I love my middle name because there can't be that many people in the world who have it (my mum's the only one I know who also has it), and if I ever have a kid, regardless of gender, he or she is getting Rochat thrown in his or her name.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:02 pm (UTC)I love there are places in the world where 'interesting' surnames are as common as smith and jones are to the English speaking world.
Lol, I bet the kid'll love it too!

Date: 2009-08-13 09:03 pm (UTC)Joyce has Irish roots, and Lynette is Welsh, (my father's Scots-Irish), but my mother is Italian. Like hard-core. And so, my younger brother and I were raised in a world that resembled "My Big, Fat,
GreekItalian Wedding" and "Everybody Loves Raymond". Seriously, I have an Uncle Vinny in upstate New York and everything. (And two cousin Vinny's out west in Ca., and four Uncle Tony's!)So the only things "Isles" about me are my strange tendency to freckle (it's the only physical characteristic that isn't Italian), my affinity for the Irish pub and my name.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:08 pm (UTC)Well, freckles are pretty awesome! I lost all Italian blood in me, lost it from my names, everything, the generation before me were Irish-Italian on my mothers side and Dutch (possibly Polish-Dutch) on my fathers side. But I got pretty much everything, somehow, from my one English descendant! (One person goes and marries an English man and we all get the name! lol.) Although apparently genetically I got enough for the doctors to consider my genes and stuff Mediterranean/Eastern Europe. Oh well.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:05 pm (UTC)Tara is named after the plantation called Tara in Gone With the Wind and Thomas is actually my mothers maiden name.
And I am named after my dad Steve however my mom originally wanted to call me Cinnamon which is why I LOVE being named after my Dad instead, lol.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:10 pm (UTC)Is Tara said Taira or Tara?? I'm always curious, I've only ever heard Taira over in the US.

That would be my only story. XD I wished she'd just named me what she wanted to "Michael Baxter" the Baxter being after my grandfather who was like my dad.

Date: 2009-08-13 09:33 pm (UTC)My middle name, Mirjam, refers to my grandmother on my mom's side, Maria. And my second middle name, Andrea, refers to my grandmother on my dad's side, Anna.
At first my full name would have been Maaike Andrea Mirjam, but then my initials would have been MAM, which means MOM in Dutch XD So my mom switched the names and thus I was named Maaike Mirjam Andrea :)
