House Unity Activity - House traits
Sep. 26th, 2008 01:44 pm
When I was applying for this community, I thought I would have been voted as a Gryffindor, because I thought that I shared a lot of the same traits with the trio, especially Ron. As people started voting on my application I realized hey I am more of a Hufflepuff then a Gryffindor. I think I probably got a vote or two for Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Some people saw some traits that I possessed from each house. This got me to thinking about what other traits I have for each house.
I am loyal, to my friends and family.
I am intelligent, I have a college degree.
I am ambitious, because I would love to go out and get a better job.
I have courage because I don't always follow the crowd, I do what I think is right.
So my question to you is: What positive traits do you have for each house? You saw my list, now I want to see yours. :)

Date: 2008-09-26 06:22 pm (UTC)I am a Very Hard Working person and I get stuff done!
Claw:
I Crave Information about topics that interest me. I don't just like something... I obsess over it.
Sly:
I am somewhat Power Hungry and enjoy being in control or the person who makes decisions. (Notice I didn't say "the leader". There is a difference.)
Gryff:
I am Outspoken and Bold and will voice my opinion no matter who opposes me.

Date: 2008-09-26 06:29 pm (UTC)I am protective of my loved ones: Fiercely, rabidly, viciously so. And I want to be close and near them at all times. I want nothing more than to form a family of my own.
I have courage: I'm gay in America. It takes courage to hold my head up every day, to take my fiancee's hand, to be myself at all costs.
I'm sneaky: Because I'm a backhanded, conniving, occasionally hypocritical little gossip monger. At least, that's my Indian name.
I was actually pretty evenly split between Gryffindor and Slytherin when I was Sorted. I was shocked at all the Gryffindor votes! I REALLY didn't see those coming. I'm glad I got into Slytherin though. :D

+Hufflepuff
I'm neutral, I'm the negotiator, I hardly ever choose sides, I can understand people with opposing opinions from my own, but I will make them think twince ;)
+Ravenclaw
I'm logical, I tend to see the answers to a problem faster than most.
+Slytherin;
I'm rather unsympathetic towards others. Drama is often brought on by one's self. Therefor I have absolutely no sympathy on those who whine about the smallest things because their lack of drama in their life.

Date: 2008-09-26 06:38 pm (UTC)I feel that I am rash and bold, sometimes to my detriment lol. I'm also fiercely loyal and pretty outgoing, too :D
Slytherin:
Oh yeah, I can be pretty darn good at manipulating a situation to work in my favor while keeping my "hands clean." You know, Machiavellian. >:) (Muahahahahaaaaa yeah, IRL).
Ravenclaw:
About 2/3 of my sorting votes were for Gryffindor, and the other 1/3 were for Ravenclaw. It might be the law school thing, idk. But I've always been an academic achiever, on top of really enjoying silence and solitude to delve into things I'm interested in, be them languages or writing or a great book.
Hufflepuff:
I personally don't see myself as a very hard worker, but I suppose that I wouldn't be where I am today if I wasn't. On top of this, loyalty is a huge priority in my life, as is kindness and open-hearted compassion for anyone and everyone. I am very accepting of others, and a lover of humanity :)

Date: 2008-09-26 06:50 pm (UTC)Gryffindor: I can be thrill-seeking on occasion. (Not very often. I'm getting old.) I am willing to stand up for a cause I believe in (gay rights, environmental protection, etc.), although it's mostly because of self/society-interest rather than having any ideals about courage or bravery to do so, I must admit. :|
Hufflepuff: I am loyal to the people I love and fiercely protective of them. I understand fairness more than right or wrong; it seems like trying to find a balance, a middle ground, and I'm all about that. I am willing to work hard when I need to.
Ravenclaw: I am obsessed with logic, to the point that I will sometimes ignore emotion. I think it is far more important to be logical and rational than anything else. I like learning things just for the sake of knowing them -- and being able to make random connections of topics that wouldn't necessarily be immediately connected. I think advances in science, technology, etc. are the coolest things in the world and can be convinced of the awesomeness of ANY subject, even if it doesn't hold my interest for too long. I think that in theory, anything is possible. I am very self-analytical and often a bit of a hermit because I really don't need much but my own brain (and a book, my computer, or my tv) to be entertained, and often get discouraged when people don't make logical sense.
Slytherin: I am controlling (I see this as a good thing). I like having a say, a decision, a choice, in anything that I get involved in. I like the idea of power and I make a point of being independent, not being beholden to anyone, striving for positive feedback, and pushing myself into situations that I can improve and benefit from. I am extremely self-interested (and honestly believe that selflessness and self-sacrifice is not something to be valued) and I would feel utterly useless if I had no attainable goals, no matter how close I was to achieving them. I like to think that I understand manipulation techniques, even if I don't often use them, except to keep myself from being manipulated (which I don't like, at all, unless I know it's happening and it benefits me to go along with it anyway). And... I think it is a Slytherin trait to want competent leadership when I'm not the one in charge, yes?

Date: 2008-09-26 07:09 pm (UTC)Slytherin I really don't have any Slytherin traits, save for perhaps a slight feeling of superiority when it comes to comparing the program I'm enrolled in with some of the other programs at my school. We just merged and, academically speaking, they're kind of night and day. So I do maybe judge people based on the lower standards of their programs, but I try not to.
Ravenclaw: I'm a bit of a nerd (and I mean that in a good way). I love to learn and would be a perpetual student if I could afford it. When I was sorted, I was split almost evenly between Claw and Gryff. I think that, in my public life at school and stuff, I'm very Claw. Because they don't see the most Gryffindor parts of me.
Which leads me to Gryffindor. I have a problem with change: I never do anything in a small way. I move across the country. I change my major. I'm impulsive and incredibly indecisive. But I'm also willing to risk my neck for what I think is right. I'm not afraid to confront problems or injustice and my natural desire for justice is very much a Gryff sense of it, rather than a Puff sense.

Date: 2008-09-26 07:17 pm (UTC)Hufflepuff : I always listen to both sides of a story, and try never to jump to conclusions.
Gryffindor : I say what i think, be dammed if people don't like it. It's what i think, not gospel.
Ravenclaw : Love of knowledge and books, comes from visiting musems as a little child and seeing things first hand. I still remember being fascinated by a ginger mummy!
Slytherin: My slytherin traits are pretty well hidden, but i think i do find it hard to delegeate work. It has to be done by me to be done properly.

Date: 2008-09-26 07:19 pm (UTC)Passionate/Intense - I think this is my biggest Gryff trait. I don't think I have courage other than that that comes from my intense passion and hence my ability to act out of passion without realizing the consequences. If I stopped to think about consequences, maybe I would know fear.
Pragmatic - I think this is my more Hufflepuff side: the understanding that hard work is sometimes necessary to get stuff done. I can dream big, but I can also see all the steps between where I am and where I want to be.
Logically-minded - I'm intelligent, yeah, but I think knowledge is a bit pointless. I think it's more important that I can follow logic, simple or complex. It's a skill in that it can be learned, but it's not easy to learn. Learning to follow and articulate complex logical sequences, whether in words, equations, or programming languages, requires your brain to work a certain way, and I think that way of thinking is very Ravenclaw.
Ambitious - Not as much as I used to be, but it's the little things. I have two job offers right now. One has better hours and higher pay and sounds more enjoyable. I turned it down. It won't help my resume at all and is not in my degree field. I had the choice between teaching math and being a receptionist, and I've chosen teaching math. The reasoning, and the only reasoning I needed to make my decision, is that I get nothing out of a job that won't further my goals, regardless of what I think I might be getting from it.
When I was sorted, I was pretty solidly Gryff, and I think that's fair. It's what I expected for myself as well. Even in my professional life, I'm known for being a bit off-the-handle, and several people have said I'm the most passionate person they've ever known (which I consider possibly the largest compliment I've ever received). I did get plenty of Claw votes, though. Having a Master's in Astrophysics will do that. To be fair, though, I'm like the most Gryff astronomer ever. I'm known for making these great, groundbreaking jumps in intuition and then not really being able to do the math to prove myself right. Which is why I didn't get a PhD.

Date: 2008-09-26 07:19 pm (UTC)Ravenclaw: I am intelligent, reasonably witty, sarcastic, and I love to read and learn new things. Yes, I am even nerdy enough to enjoy documentaries, puzzles, and logic games.
Gryffindor: I am also reasonably brave. I've moved across the country three time and started my life over simply because it was required of me and I am not afraid to try new things. I've also engaged in bizarre sorts of bravery such as breaking up a knife fight and dealing with untamed horses. I am also quite idealistic, somewhat reckless, and committed to an ethos outside my own self.
Slytherin: Until recently, I considered myself to have no ambition whatsoever. Hell, I could barely drag my butt off the couch to get another beer. (Kidding.) While I think that ambition can sometimes blind you to possibility, I am now undertaking a pretty big project that is fairly ambitious. My husband and I are helping to create a farm park and will teach classes on food production. So, I do have ambition: food security.
This was a cool activity.

Date: 2008-09-26 07:23 pm (UTC)Ravenclaw - when I'm not forgetful or procrastinating, I do well in school. I wait 'til the last minute and have always had attendance issues (with work too, I am one late ho), but I get stuff done. Plus I'm curious as hell, I love absorbing knowledge like a sponge!
Slytherin - I can be manipulative and conniving went I want to. I've stolen stuff and lied. But it's usually only if I feel something is overpriced or I've gotten myself into a real tight spot. :| I can turn on the charm too lol. But I do feel guilty about it.
Hufflepuff - 'tis what I am! I'm an overachiever, optimist, loyal as hell. You'd have to step on me an awful lot for me to say "that's enough". Once we're good pals, my door is always open. I've tried to say "that's it" before, never works! And I darn right love to help others. I don't have any ambitions to be rich, either... just to pursue happiness, make enough to get by, surround myself with friends and family. As long as I'm adventuring and fightin' crime and injustice along the way!

Date: 2008-09-26 07:32 pm (UTC)I think more than traits, I'm naming things I see from each house that are not necessarily specific.
Slytherin: Though I put myself before most people, I put those closest to me before myself. I feel that from Slytherins in the series.
Ravenclaw: I use cold logic, which helps me make decisions based on reality and not emotions.
Hufflepuff: I can be the one that saves the day...and is often overlooked.
Gryffindor: I can tell people the truth, and still come out likable in the end. When I want to.

Date: 2008-09-26 07:34 pm (UTC)I'm reckless, impulsive, proud, brash, loud, very opinionated and bold. I speak up when I feel like it, and I'm confident in what I can do. I can be passionate for the things I'm really interested in, but I tend to be fickle as well. I'm action-oriented.
Hufflepuff:
I'm genuine, loyal, honest, fair and stubborn. I try and understand people's attitudes and I try to listen and be fair to all.
Oh, and I can cook as well. :D YAY HELGA HUFFLEPUFF!The person I am most like in the book (according to my friends) is Tonks, and
I agree.
Ravenclaw:
I'm Romantic: progressive, intuitive, analytic to a certain degree, fanciful and slightly whimsical, in touch with emotions/intellect and I dream a lot.
I've got a sound mind as well, although I wouldn't go so far to say what defines a Ravenclaw is intelligence. (All other houses are intelligent, too!)
Slytherin:
I bend the rules like woah, often disregarding them whole. I do this behind the scene, unlike a Gryffindor who would try and get things changed. Nah, I'm too lazy for that: I bend the rules for my benefit and if other people don't do that- well, their fault! I'm quick-witted and resourceful.
Most people say I'm either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, some say Gryffindor.

Date: 2008-09-26 07:39 pm (UTC)Ravenclaw: I'm a perfectionist when it comes to certain things (especially drawings) and despite my general laziness I have to work on them and figure out how I can make them at least close to perfect. I also consider myself as quite creative.
Slytherin: Sometimes I prefer working things out by myself. I am fine doing things on my own and actually feel that others would only be an encumbrance to me. I'm ambitious if I want something and can be cunning on the way to reach it, not necessarily watching for others (yes, this can be a good trait and help you to reach your goal).
Gryffindor: I'm impulsive, especially when it comes to doing stupid things, but since we should list something positive, this is similar to be very passionate, dragging along others and a general rather positive, cheerful, spirited view and behaviour. When I know what I want, I am determined no matter what.
no subject
Date: 2008-09-26 07:53 pm (UTC)Claw: I have always been rather creatively minded, and while I am also very realistic in my goals, I think I'm a bit of a dreamer at times. I like to think that anything is possible.
Slyth: I'm somewhat vain - I can't help it, I like to look my best, and appearance is very important to me. I also have a wicked tongue sometimes. My humour tends to run more towards very deadpan sarcasm, more witty than slapstick funny.
Gryff: I'm not afraid to speak my mind about things sometimes if it's important enough to me. And I'm not ashamed or afraid to be affectionate with my boyfriend in public, which I consider a form of courage.
(I also sometimes slack off a LITTLE bit from things - I'm posting this when I should be working, but there's a bit of a lull right now, so... My supervisor likes me and lets me get away with it sometimes cause I work hard enough, otherwise. ;) Heh. I think that's probably both a Slytherin AND Gryffindor thing?)

Date: 2008-09-26 08:03 pm (UTC)Gryffindor - I think I'm a very passionate person. I will stand up to people in defense of others.
Hufflepuff - I guess its a good thing I'm in Hufflepuff because I can't decide on just one Puff trait. I am very hardworking and loyal and protective and friendly.
Ravenclaw - Almost half my votes were for Ravenclaw. I think I'm a fairly intelligent person and I love reading about and discovering new things.
Slytherin - I'll have to go with ambitious for this one. I am sort of, but not really, ashamed to say I always look at things as what's in it for me and how can I achieve what I want with the littlest of efforts.

Date: 2008-09-26 08:09 pm (UTC)Badger:
- I am very, very loyal to my friends and family. And only them.
- I also have a tremendous self-initiative and get things done when I need to.
Eagle:
- I enjoy learning things. Not everything, mind you, but I do it for knowledge's sake. There may be an agenda in there, but I want to know, first and foremost.
- Intelligence? Sure. I have a steep learning curve and I manage to do things well on first try. People tend to underestimate me because of my height and age.
Lion:
- I am very sociable. Outgoing. Extroverted. Loud. I crave relationships and interaction.
- Have a tendency to take charge when there's no profiency in the current leadership.
Snake:
- Ambitious. Arrogant. Machiavellian. Interpersonal. I know myself very well, and I feel like I deserve the best, so I go out and get it.
- Appeasing. I mind where I am on the social ladder, and I try to get to know those of whom who have the power to boost me up. I try to please people. Non-abrasive is the way to go.

Date: 2008-09-26 08:21 pm (UTC)I am willing to take a stand and to fight for what is right even if it is not necessarily popular and might involve me going out on a limb to do so. I will take a risk if I think it's going to have a positive outcome.
Hufflepuff
I believe very strongly in fairness & equity/equality. I am very loyal to those I care about and I value hard work and try to live that every day.
Ravenclaw
I LOVE TO LEARN!!!. This can be evidenced by my advanced degree study (and the continued study I have planned up to and beyond the doctoral level) and my interests in general. Books are good friends of mine as are research, analysis, and writing. I am also somewhat creative and have a tendency toward a sarcastic wit. I think that knowledge is an essential resource, tool, and often underestimated power that one should always have at her disposal. I have found a career that keeps me at a center of knowledge...the university and with my career goals in both areas of college student services and academia, I expect to never stop learning and seeking new knowledge.
Slytherin
I am incredibly motivated toward success. While I definitely maintain my scruples, I am willing to take advantage of every possible opportunity to achieve my goals.
no subject
Date: 2008-09-26 09:32 pm (UTC)But I'll still play along.
I am very curious about the world around me and passionate to learn and chip away at my own ignorance. I think in a very, very real way that knowledge is power, and if America doesn't start valuing science a little more, we're going to be screwing ourselves over for the future. I'm also a very rational/logical thinker who values evidence and substantive proof over faith or blind assertions, but I don't believe that's a Ravenclaw trait; I think it just goes well with Ravenclaw traits. See the distinction? (Luna and Hermione are both proof against it, anyway.)
I am extremely concerned about social justice. I'm very political and tend to place equal rights (and personal rights in general) above probably every other consideration. I'm also convinced that fairness means starting everyone out on even ground and prefer for systems to be designed with that in mind - not necessarily to prevent "cheating" (people with certain advantages), but to give everyone the same opportunity. (As I'm sure some of the mods around HiH have noticed when I complain about things. XD)
I am bold and outspoken; I do not settle, and I do not hesitate to point out things I take issue with. I don't see the world in black and white, but I do believe in the quote that is often my away: "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." As my fellow snakes know from our discussions of the Battle of Hogwarts, I think there are times in life when you are obligated to stand up and fight. As such, I tend to think rather poorly of people who refuse to or don't care about voting, especially in pivotal elections such as this one. Do your civic duty, damn it.
And finally, I am individualistic. It's not that I have a flexible view of morality; it's just that I have a different one (which generally sticks to the malum in se stuff and disregards malum prohibitum, unless I think it's justified). I understand that humans are inherently self-interested and that in many situations, "moral" constraints simply get in the way of achieving goals. Unlike Voldemort, however, a core tenet of my philosophy is that you may not violate the rights of others in the pursuit of your own happiness.

Date: 2008-09-26 10:46 pm (UTC)Hufflepuff - My family and friends are by far the most important things in my life. Too important sometimes, to be honest. I care about people to the capacity that its to my detriment at times. I'm also immensely loyal, empathetic, and extremely passionate about equality and justice - thus I'm a law student. I'm also really dorky, which fits, in my mind.
Ravenclaw - Along with being a dork, I'm a huge geek. I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and learning. I'm determined to remain wrapped up in academia for as long as possible. I worked for a year without being in school, and it felt like my livelihood was withering away. I at least need an intellectual stimulating career when I do have to grow up and take real world responsibility. I'm also a creative soul - art is a huge part of my life. I'm intellectually minded, and love extensively long analyses.
Gryffindor - I'm deeply passionate about pretty much everything. I have strong convictions about politics, progressiveness, and equality. I'm known for being a fierce storyteller, partly because of crazy situations I find myself in that I can always twist into a great tale. And I have a rambunctiously adventurous inner-imp that doesn't get to play nearly enough. Leadership is another quality I've always prided myself in but I think that's a trait shared pretty equally with Slytherin...
Slytherin - A lot of people don't know it, but I can be incredibly manipulative. I have a knack for getting what I want. And when things aren't in my favor, I can usually change the facts to make it so, especially when it comes to avoiding responsibility for something I've done wrong. My knack for twisting things is part of why my family always said I'd be a good lawyer. I'm also pretty ambitious, which is why I chose to pursue law to help people, as opposed to a career of lesser standing but that would be just as beneficial to others in the long run.
And... I'm sure that was far more than any of you wanted to read ;-)

Date: 2008-09-26 11:17 pm (UTC)Gryffindor:
I'm very enthusiastic with anything that interests me, and I think I come off as a very "HERE I AM" person to a lot of people. I also love to laugh and have fun, and humour has been a survival mechanism for me since I was a kid. I don't know if this is a particular Gryffindor trait, but it's something that I relate to in the Weasley twins especially.
Ravenclaw:
I enjoy learning and I always have. Actually, I enjoy it so much that I want to give others the same experience and am aiming to become a teacher in the near future. I'm also hugely idealistic and dreamy, and I consider myself to be reflective.
Slytherin:
I will go to great lengths to protect myself. Not at the expense of others(at least not people I feel a loyalty towards), but if I feel the need to protect something about myself, I will. I've come to a point in my life where I've realised long ago that sometimes you need to rely on yourself and yourself alone, and I'm not afraid to be independent or to set myself over others in certain situations.
Hufflepuff:
Aside from the 'obvious' loyalty, I'm very easily frustrated by unfairness - almost to the point of desperation if I can't do something about it. I value equality and try to be including and open-minded. I'm also very laid-back and just about the polar opposite of pretentious. Despite claiming to have given up on love, I'm a hopeless romantic (though not really in the candles and roses sense).
I'm also very empathetic, almost a bit annoyingly so. I put myself in other's situations very easily (for the most part), and I can get so involved in a simple TV show that it's almost as if it's about me. My empathy is mostly something I've learned through the years. Certain things in my life has strengthened it a lot.
And I have this thing about always trying to be myself completely (though I admit I fail at times when I feel the urge to hide behind walls) and being genuine. I don't know if this is a canon puff trait... probably not. But I see this need in a lot of Puffs, including myself.

Date: 2008-09-26 11:54 pm (UTC)I'm loyal to a fault. In my younger, more trusting years, this got me into trouble. It breaks my heart when I grow apart from old friends or when people aren't as excited about spending time with me as I am with them.
I'm enthusiastic and stubborn when it comes to those things about which I'm truly passionate. I become wholly dedicated to them when it's called for. Otherwise, I'm a bit of a pushover.
I have a detailed plan for my life, and I strive to be oriented towards those goals. Buuuut I'm also a very by-the-books person.

Gryffindor:
I am passionate about what I love to do in life (create art), and I’ve gone to great lengths to make my dreams come true. It's my second year in college and I'm working on a liberal arts degree at the moment so I can transfer to the university (or an art school) and go into studio art, and I'm very adamant on getting to where I want to be. I won't take no for an answer and I will morph my plans in any way so that I can succeed. I am also bold when the situation calls. Even though I may seem timid and quiet (I'm not overly talkative unless I'm comfortable around you), I'll speak up for my beliefs and argue with others if I hear gossip about one of my friends.
Ravenclaw:
With a transition from my Lion traits, I love to learn and if I find something that I am extremely interested in, I will stick with it and become slightly obsessed. One of my greatest loves is art history, and I could probably go on about it for hours if you'd let me. xD I also plan to go into this field of study in school (either minoring or dual-majoring in it), and I've actually gone so far as to consider teaching art history (though, I am unsure about this at the moment). - Oh, and I'm also quite nerdy at times
*coughworldofwarcraftcough*. xDHufflepuff:
Aside from working hard to make my dreams come true, I am extremely loyal to my friends and family. I am always the one who others come to when they have a problem (I've been told that I could be a councilor if I wanted to). I'm good at listening and offering advice, even if I personally have trouble talking to others about my problems) and I’m always offering to do favors for my friends. Some may view this (the favors) as me being a push-over, but it's really the fact that my friends mean the world to me and I would do almost anything to ensure that they will be by my side. Plus, I love doing things for others because it makes them happy. When they're happy, I'm happy.
Slytherin:
I am a little bit arrogant in some areas (Who isn't? The arrogance trait could really go into any of the four houses, though.), and can be manipulative when/if the situation calls. I don't necessarily enjoy lying to others, but if it's for an outcome that would be the lesser of two evils, I will either lie or simply omit parts of the truth. However, I almost always feel guilty afterward. ^^; Another trait is ambition. I mentioned my need to succeed or accomplish my dreams in the Gryffindor section, and I feel that fits here as well. I am incredibly steadfast when it comes to something that I want, and if I know that I can have it/do it, I will try as hard as I possibly can.

Ravenclaw: I pride myself on my intellect and ability to think things through very well.
Slytherin: I'm ambitious, very. And when I want something, I do everything I can to get it.
I was voted Ravenpuff, which upon reflection is incredibly apt. :D But I understand why my Hufflepuff characteristics shine through in most things I do. So there.

Date: 2008-09-27 01:35 am (UTC)Slytherin: I'm surprisingly a bit more of this than I let on. I am definitely ambitious in all things. I learn the system and then I learn how to manipulate it. For example, and this is probably the best example, unlike other people who went and helped with every event before they auditioned for this activities committee in high school, instead, I got to know the members and ended up tutoring some of them in Honors English which brought out my snark and personality. Sooo by the time the auditions rolled around they "knew me" and I was comfortable enough to answer the questions as chill as possible. Oh... and I made the committee.
Ravenclaw: I was almost put in this house, I do love to learn. I really do. And I will now segue to my House
Gryffindor: I do love to learn, but only the things I am passionate about. Otherwise, I am completely blase towards it. I've got no qualms with public speaking or even making a fool out of myself. My other house traits tend to balance this, but I am wicked impulsive and often suffer from foot in mouth disease if rubbed the wrong way.
Well that was fun

Date: 2008-09-28 09:18 pm (UTC)Oh, this is so totally me, too. I always used to joke that the way I got through school is "getting the most impact from the least amount of work" - by the second or third day with any teacher, I almost always have a strategy for getting the teacher to think I'm such an awesome student that they'll give me indefinite extensions whenever I want for the rest of the year, because I'm "obviously not abusing the teacher's kindness"
Seriously, though. I almost think that's kind of 'claw, too... it's just being creative to find the solution that doesn't require any extra effort! xD
You Ravendor, you.
