Prefect Applications -- Voting
Feb. 25th, 2005 03:08 pmPoll is now closed. Thank you all for your votes!!
The questions are....
A) If you were to see someone break the rules, how would you approach the situation?
B) What do you feel are your best and worst qualities?
Gryffindor
Applicant #1
A) "Well, it would depend on what sort of breech it was. The first thing to do I suppose is let the person know that they have broken a rule. If they are a new member, I would give them a warning first. With established members, it result in an appropriate point deduction, since they know the basic rules. Depending on the severity of the situation, I would probably also ask for input at the moderator's community. It's important to maintain a balance between being firm and fair. I'm the kind of person who believes in the benefit of the doubt, meaning that I understand occasionally people make mistakes. However, I will not tolerate a blatant disregard for the rules."
B) "Good:
I'm a very enthusiastic person, and will devote a lot of energy to activities which I enjoy; if something matters to me I'll often go beyond what is expected of me. I'm a very social and friendly person: I enjoy meeting new people, starting conversation, and also introducing people to each other; I've been called a social hub. I'm quite smart and curious. I've got a knack for diplomacy.
Bad:
Sometimes when I think that I am being direct and too the point it can come across as cold or harsh. I can be quite sensitive. This doesn't usually result in any sort of retaliation. Just me sitting around feeling hurt. (Fortunately, I'm a pretty forgiving individual...) Occasionally I get a little over-ambitious; I tend to think that I can do far more on my own than I actually can."
Applicant #2
A) "It really depends on the situation. If they break a minor rule, and I know it is their first time, I'd simply give them a warning. If they do so more than once, I'd dock a small amount of points, nothing major. If they broke a major rule though, like starting drama or disrespect to a mod, I tell them what exactly they did wrong, freeze the post, and immediately go to the maintaining community with my reason for reprimanding the person. I wouldn't immediately dock points for a major offense, because that starts more drama; I would talk to a mod about it first to see if they agree."
B) "Best - I work hard, think quickly, and love activity. I love having fun and being the cause of fun. I'm intelligent (on the verge of sounding cocky there, I think), and I listen well to new ideas.
Worst - I'm extremely opinionated, and do have a temper =/ I'm also pretty emotional, and little things make me cry. I also procrastinate concerning school work, but most everyone does."
Applicant #3
A) "Most likely, they just didn't know, so I'd give them a polite warning and tell them that they were breaking a rule. If they kept going, I'd tell them that I would deduct points/ban them, and if they still went on, I'd punish them."
B) "I'm very dedicated to projects once I start them, but I'm only interested in finishing things that entertain me. This means I'm likely to finish a short story for no reason before I finish my maths assignments."
Applicant #4
A) "If they're a first time offender I'd politely inform them of their mistake and point them towards the rules (if they're an obvious newbie). For second time offenders I'd mention that I've already spoken to them and give them a warning. Third time would be a temporary banning. If the offender could argue that they wouldn't continue breaking rules I'd consider letting them back in (I believe in second chances), but only on certain conditions."
B) "For my worst qualities, I'm a terrible procrastinator, especially when it comes to studying. I do have a hot temper in RL, although I manage to sucessfully suppress it on the internet. I guess a couple of my good qualities are that I'm very honest and I tend to help out people (in RL life and on LJ) as much as I can if they have a query."
Applicant #5
A) "If they were a new member or it was a first offence I would give them a reminder about the rule. If it was recurring I'd talk to the head, and take away points. If it started drama, I would definitely take away points."
B) "I think that my temper is my worst quality though I a have learned to control it. My best I think is loyalty to friends, encouragement, and really creative and fun ideas that just pop in my head."
Slytherin
Applicant #1
A) "Whine and cry... Seriously I would take points if need be, freeze comments, make warnings, and if I couldn't figure out what to do I would speak with a Mod or the Auror."
B) "My best quality is that I actually like this work and I like the people. I also voice my opinions and am not afraid to speak out but do so in a mature way and with hopefully as little drama as possible. My worst quality is my computer that I will eventually kill, but for now seems to like me enough to work semi better then before."
Applicant #2
A) "It would matter on the situation. If it's something huge like major house bashing I would issue a warning and freeze the offending comments and all those after it. And then I would take it either to e-mail or AIM, but first try to promote negotations or the likes. They are free to discuss the issue as long as it's not in side HiH, and as long as it does not effect HiH in anyway. By that I mean they post an entry saying 'OH, WELL, S/HE WHO WILL NOT BE NAMED IS LIKE A TOTAL --".
If it's something small, a warning will be issued, but if it's something larger like spamming, not dropping something and being a nuscience, being an all around ***hole I will farther measures. Depending on the seriousness of the crime."
B) "My best quality when it comes to this is probably my loads of free time. (Call me a loser if you will, but I have a lot of free time.) Also, my interprutation of certain people. Though it sounds bad, it allows me to be more reasonable on punishments and when replying. If I have a certain perception of a person, then I better know how to deal with them. My worst quality might be (and the answer ended here... I'm assuming the applicant wished to go back and finish, but forgot?)."
Applicant #3
A) "I would most likely just warn the person straight forwardly and take away a few house points (Because I am evil). If they did it again, I would be forced (depending on the nature of the crime) to suspend them for a while (depending on the severity of the situation) and then if a third time, I may need to talk to a mod about having them punished more severely."
B) "Best qualities- I am committed, dependable, and hard working
Worst- I tend to be slightly (and really only slightly) biased towards my house."
Ravenclaw
Applicant #1
A) "I think it depends on the rule broken and the degree to which it was broken. If it wasn't intentional a simple friendly reminder of the rule in question may be enough. If it WAS intentional, then the reaction would be more drastic, which I would have no problem doing (I was a prefect for real at school so I know how this works heh)."
B) "Best: I treat everyone fairly, I genuinely care about everyone, I'm always available (heh) and I tend to deal with responsibility well. Worst: taking things too seriously. Yeah, I tend to do that a lot :P"
Applicant #2
A) "Obviously this cannot just be a blanket answer as there are different degrees to rule-breaking. And of course there is a difference in certain things. For example, if a discussion got too heated and out of hand, then warnings might be issued, but if it's outright flaming of a member, then points might be taken and comments deleted. And with regards to things that don't seem to have much to do with the community, once or twice might be allowed, but more than that it's time for deletion. And any outright abuse of another member/house would be grounds for punishment ranging from points taken to explusion depending on severity."
B) "Best: I believe that some of my best qualities are the fact that I'm highly organized when it comes to online things (RL is a completely different story, don't ask me to explain it), I'm very creative, I get very into things (like total immersion, I tend to get really excited when I'm into things too), I'm very much a leader, and I have a wicked sense of humour.
Worst: I'm a huge procrastinator, I'm not good at working with other people (although I will if I have too), I don't trust other people to do things (hence my issue with working with them), I tend to get wrapped up in the projects that I start and ignore other things, and I can get very blunt and not care if I'm hurting people."
Applicant #3
A) "This would obviously depend on the rule broken and how serious the situation was. If it wasn't very serious, I would warn the offender, or maybe delete the post/comment that broke the rule. For more serious offenses, I would consider banning the user."
B) "Well, my best qualities are that I'm devoted and dedicated and don't back out of something I've volunteered to help with. I'm fairly intelligent and I pick up on new things very quickly. My worst qualities are that I'm not always particularly good at spur-of-the-moment creativity. I like to think about things for a bit before I act. And I'm not very good at giving people more than one or two chances if they offend me."
Applicant #4
A) "The exact action I would take depends on the situation. If it was an offensive post, I would immediately delete it. If it was a string of imflamatory comments, I would freeze and screen the thread right away to prevent it from escalating. Aside from that, I would first contact the person breaking the rules and speak to them about it. I would politely let them know what they had done, what rule their action had broken, and what steps (if any) would be needed to correct the situation. I would gladly listen to their side of the story and any concerns or questions they might have. Basically, I would do everything in my power to resolve any disputes that might arise and to make sure that the offender understood how not to violate the rule in the future. If I found that I wasn't getting through to this person, I would then broach the subject with the other officials of HiH to see if we could come up with a good solution or what additional action should be taken."
B) "Best qualities: I'm a perfectionist, I'm dedicated, I'm open-minded and objective, and I'm pretty darn smart. I'm also good with graphics and layouty things.
Worst qualities: I'm can be pretty lazy at times and I have a very low tolerance for ignorance or constant rule-breaking and disrespect for others. While I am usually easy to get along with, I can become not so nice when provoked into the "bitchy-mod" mode."
Hufflepuff
Applicant #1
A) "Depends on the severity of the situation. If something serious is going on I'll first jump in myself to try to calm things down, then e-mail a mod about it. If it's not really serious and someone just broke a rule without realizing it (like posting something at HiH that should be in the common room or something) I'll point out the rule and maybe ask them to delete the post when needed. If it's something in the common room I'll do my best to work it out, preferably without a mod interfering, because I don't want any non-Hufflepuffs in the common room unless it's really necessary ;)"
B) "My worst quality is that I'm pretty shy, which makes it difficult for me stand up for myself or to handle confrontations of any kind. Also, I find it very difficult to spend time on something I'd rather not be doing. I could use some more discipline.
My best quality is that when I'm picked for something I'll do my very best to live up to it which will make me do things I normally wouldn't or thought I couldn't. And in some occasions my shyness and lack of discipline will be replaced by this sense of responsibility."
Applicant #2
A) "I wouldn't spazz out like Percy, but. Most certainly would I send them to their Head of House for furthing dealing with, or. Maybe, I'd let them write sentances. But as I said, I would report them to their Head of Houses before I gave sentances."
B) "My best qualities, is that I'm usally seen on LJ alot, oh and I'm not easy to persueade. Unless it involves a pillow fort, whip cream, and X-Men comics. My worst qualities, is that sometimes I usally forget about this little community. I'm oh so sorry that I do, but my Harry Potter obsession has came back, so I rarely forget, but sometimes I do! o_o; I have oh so other good qualities, as I'm very humorous, and I can translate about eight diffrent launguages, I'm a good updater when it comes to communties. Oh, and I promote..Alot..XD And more worst qualities, I'll probably be somewhat soft on my dear Hufflepuffs. But, what about the rest of the house prefects, they'll probably do the same. But anyways."
Applicant #3
A) "First I would warn them and point them towards the rules. If it got worse (or was a really bad offense), I would take away house points. If it continued, I would report it to someone higher than me."
B) "Best-Intelligence/Common Sense. Worst-I can be rather opinionated about things I'm passion about (a la hufflepuff bashing or house bashing in general)."
Applicant #4
A) "I'd give them an appropriate scolding. I'd first tell them what they did wrong, then why it is wrong, then what will happen if they do it again (but first I need to know what penalties may or may not be) and then I'd keep an eye on their problem."
B) "I feel I have a good understanding of people, I can get very dedicated to things, but sometimes I can get really absent minded and I don't have a good memory. I mean, I'll check my LJ often, but I wouldn't be able to remember when and where I gave points or docked points... but that's only sometimes, if my life gets too crazy. I'll really do my best to keep it in check if I get this position."
Applicant #5
A) "I think everyone deserves a warning before any serouis action is taken - sometimes people just don't realise they're doing something wrong and a friendly reminder is all they need. I also think that a community as big and involved as this needs to have rules in order to function properly and those rules need to be taken seriously. I think there should be a 'disciplinary code' so that prefects/mods can be seen to be working together and there are certain standard punishments for things."
B) "-I spend way too much time on the internet. That is both good and bad :)
-I am very fair. Justice is very important to mee - I'm seriously not just saying that, it's one of the things that my mum brought up in my 21st speech.
-I can be stubborn. When I decide to do somehting I stick to it (eg I was up til 1am this morning trying to get an icon I was making just the way I wanted it. I probably should have left it til the next day, but I'd decided I wanted it done..."
[Poll #444362]
The reason for the text entry poll is so that the results will be a surprise. XP
There was going to be an option to vote for keeping your current Prefect, but not all current Prefects reapplied. This will make things much more fair. Choose wisely!!!
Results will be posted by Monday at the absolute latest.
