No, seriously, I thought that the UK child's cover DID look rather goofy and anticlimactic. I thought maybe those millions of things were Teh Hallows, haha.
The Death Chamber: * The sunken pit in the middle is quite large. o "The center of it was sunken, forming a great stone pit," p773 o "His footsteps echoed loudly as he walked slowly toward the dais," p773 o Most of the battle takes place here, p799-809 o Even on the dais is enough room for Sirius and Bellatrix to duel, p804 * The benches (probably about ten) circle the entire room. o "stone benches running around the room and descending in steep steps," p773 o "stone pit some twenty feet below them," p773 o Ten steps assumes a 2 ft (~60cm) height for each one * Note: This room is huge. * If each step is 4 ft wide, the dais is 12 ft across, and there's a 20 ft radius around the dais before reaching the bottom step, the room is at least 132 feet across - almost half a football field.
It makes senseeeee. With the Curtains and everything too.
since when? since chapter 2 of the first book. and harry intentionally made aunt marge blow up without a wand too...but it was just never explained. i hope wandless magic does happen...it'd be a cool exaplaing point. looks more like he's levitating something than catching. only one hand is up and his elbow is turned outward. you can catch a frisbee like that, but not much else.
maybe "deathly hallow" is a new brand of wizard's boomerangs, and he and voldemort are playing catch.
About the American cover: the curtains, Voldemort reaching for Harry, Harry reaching for nothing....
Ohhhh, yes, I've definately got theories now! Not very good ones, but theories nonetheless! XD
Also, does anyone have any ideas about the trinket on the cover of the UK adult cover? It seems strange that there would be a Slytherin pendant when we've already got a family ring :/
Ohhh....I hadn't thought of that, so I was thinking that you were probably right. Then, I checked the book and it said that the locket was golden and had "no sign of the ornate S" (p. 568 Brit.)
Now I am TOTALLY confused! (And totally excited too, of course!!!)
But we do know that there was a locket that did in fact, belong to Slytherin. They may not have found it, but maybe the cover of that book is a clue as to someone stumbling across it in the final installment on the book?
Yeah, I'm sure they're going to find the real locket. I mean, if it's a Horcrux and all....
(For some reason, I'd forgotten that the only locket described was the fake Horcrux. Blah, I hate it when my brain dies sometimes....x_x)
There's the locket that they found while cleaining Grimmauld place, though. Y'know, the one that all of those clever fans figured out is the REAL Horcrux. ;) Rowling didn't really describe it in detail, but you'd think that Harry would notice a huge, emerald "S" on it. Oh, wait, it's Harry we're talking about here...heh.
At first I assumed that the audience was symbolic- y'know, everyone's watching and waiting for the big showdown. Though, given how the previous covers had images of specific things, I sort of re-thought this.
Curtains + shadowy figures make me think that those are dead people- the one that Harry heard talking from behind the veil.
so true. i'm havin a ball thinkin/talkin about it.
I thought that too at first...but I was listening to OotP on sudio today at work, and I was at the scene with the veiled doorway. The room that Harry/V-mort are standing in is totally that room. Meaning I don't think they're beyond the veil, but our POV is. A thought, anyway. If that's true though, then I'd have no idea who the people are. Maybe they're just backs of chairs that look like people?
Ah, I see what you mean. I remember the room being set up like an amphitheater of sorts, and the stone arches in the back kind of recall that. But the sky seriously bugs me! It could be just symbolic (a sunset at the close of the series), but I'm not too sure. If not, why is it outside?
Also, the book describes one archway, the one with the veil hanging from it. There are so many arches in this picture! I kind of wonder if they're all different arches that lead to the same place? Yeah, I'm still stuck on the idea that Harry and Voldemort are chillin' in the Afterlife in that picture, haha. You could be right, though, it makes sense to me.
Good thought. Hmmm....maybe this is a similar room, but not neccesarily the exact one that's in the department of mysteries. I mean...they never said there was only one archway. Maybe there are several.
Heh, I saw it on the TODAY show this morning, and I knew people were going to be screaming about it when I got online. Now, how many essays on what the different objects are in the British cover are we going to get?
I am so excited! I love the US edition. I always think the US editions are generally better than the children's UK. I do like the adult UK but the US is better in my opinion. I guess that is a good thing since I will be gettin the US edition. I just think the children's UK could be done better, but I am sure I will understand it when I read the story but still it isn't as apealing. Now lets see all the HP book are graphics now :)
UPDATE: Arthur Levine, the US Potter editor, spoke this morning on the TODAY show about the American cover:
"We're seeing Harry in a very interesting situation. Readers will find out exactly what the situation is." Levine was then asked whether we know someone is going to die, to which he replied, "We do know that someone's going to die.
"When I was reading it, I had both the excitement and the power of the book, and the plot, driving me forward. But I was also feeling a little sad. It's the last time."
When Levine admitted he "sobbed and sobbed" while reading Deathly Hallows, he was asked the following:
"That means someone we like dies, doesn't it?"
"Well, it means it is a very, very emotional book," he responded.

Oh my, what a cover. (Although I can't say that I like orange, though. v___v But maybe it has some symbolism or another. Gold-orange to symbolize that Gryffindor is the best of course?)
And the painting can be taken in from so many perspectives! Some could say that it looks like they're fighting together...some may say that they're fighting for the same thing. It also looks like Harry's calling something that Voldy's trying to ward off! And I'm ever so curious about the people in the background...and how it's in a coliseum and how there are curtainsPOSSIBLE RETURN OF THE DRAPES OF DOOM...?? XD
I can't WAIT for this thing to get out! I want it NOW!
Spoiler Highlight to read it.
And I'm still hoping she'll bring back Sirius. (is still vacationing in Egypt)

Voldemort: Stop! In the name of love, before you break my heart...
It does look sort of the Harry's in a coliseum, doesn't it? Or possibly the Veil Room, but someone already mentioned that they're outside... The curtains are certainly frayed-looking, and that was a major item of interest about the Veil. If they do end up going BEHIND the Veil, I can already imagine the "Harry came back and Sirius didn't?!?!?!" screams. I'd be one of them, in fact. :D
I wonder why there's bits of rock and broken timber everywhere... It's not like "shoujo bubbles" in manga - random bits of wood tend to show up for a reason in art, I think. It kind of reminds me of stone henge a little. All broken down but still standing.
I wouldn't have said it looks like he's catching a frisbee though.. More like the snitch, but since when does the snitch come down into your hand? And the locket is definitely suspicious, but since there's also a locket on the UK Adult version, I'll say it's probably obvious.
UK Children's Edition
The stag is obviously Prongs — we're all familiar enough with the story to spot that right off. And the snake on the other end... I'm guessing they represent what Harry fears (Voldemort Winning) and what Harry knows will protect him (Dead Parents, though I still don't get the logic of that one). Or at least something like that.
Is it my imagination, or are there faces in the clouds on the back cover?
The House Elf (I'm assuming here — it LOOKS like a House Elf) holding the Sword of Gryffindor has me in stitches. I can only hope it's Dobby and not Kreacher.
All the gems and goodies it looks like they're running through? Who knows, but they DO look like they've seen some battle.
Final comment on this one... I'm thinking the orangey-reddish sky is significant, because we're seeing it again. And there is an arch again. In fact, I'd say arches with orangey-reddish skies on the other side are almost certainly in our future.
UK Adult Edition
Slytherin Locket = obvious. Though you'd think it'd be set in white gold and emeralds, all things considered. Or silver. Unless this is yet another hint that Godric and Salazar were buddies (which we've gotten by this point), the color scheme is off.
