Rowling to Kill Two in Final 'Potter' Book

LONDON (Reuters) - Children's author J.K. Rowling has revealed that at least two characters will die in the seventh and final installment of her bestselling Harry Potter series, but was careful not to say who.
Children and adults are expected to rush and buy the final Harry Potter novel in their tens of millions when it is complete, and if the publication of the sixth book is anything to go by, secrecy surrounding the plot will be tight.
Rowling has already said that the final chapter of the seventh book was written long ago.
"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly," she said in an interview broadcast on Monday on Britain's Channel 4. "One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die."
When asked to be more specific, she added: "No, I'm not going to commit myself, because I don't want the hate mail or anything else."
She did explain that she understood an author's desire to kill off the main character of a successful series.
"I've never been tempted to kill him (Harry) off before the end of book seven, because I always planned seven books and that's where I want to go.
"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks 'Well, I'm going to kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels ... so it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."
Rowling, 40, wrote the first Harry Potter adventure when she was an unemployed single mother, but has gone on to become one of the richest authors in history with a personal fortune estimated at more than $1 billion.
The Harry Potter series has sold an estimated 300 million copies worldwide.

He's such a secondary character... hrm.

Date: 2006-06-28 07:24 pm (UTC)I've had a hunch since there was talk of a big death in Book 5 that Hagrid wouldn't survive to the end of the series, so his death wouldn't be a big shock to me. I agree that a Weasley may die, possibly Arthur or Molly. I wouldn't care if it was Percy though, since I can't stand Percy.
Now, if we were choosing who we -want- to see die, Wormtail would be on my list... as would Percy Weasley and Dolores Umbridge. ;) But alas, although I claim she lives in my head sometimes, I am not JKR.

Date: 2006-06-28 07:38 pm (UTC)I truly believe that it's going be Voldie and Harry though. Look at their odds: very slim of living together in harmony. There's the prophecies, the fact that they have the same blood in them so there must be some connection, and their wands. Not to mention the fact that they know what each other has gone through, except Harry was for the greater good, and Voldie turned to the dark side.
This is just like a puzzle that's missing that one peice and we won't find it until the release of the 7th book! And it's killing me!

Date: 2006-06-28 08:11 pm (UTC)HOWEVER, if we're looking at deaths in relation to Harry, Ginny is a big possibility. So is Ron, but I think after this huge setup with R/Hr, it seems unlikely that JKR would end on that dreary of a note. Now, Ginny could fall into that category, but there's a lot of theory that lends intselfs to Ginny's death, looking at parallels drawn through the years in the Wizarding World.
Harry is a significant possibility as well, but even if he does "die", I doubt he'll stay dead. That's a theory of MINE, but I won't get into it here. :P

I just CAN NOT WAIT.

Date: 2006-06-29 01:23 am (UTC)And I was going to pick those same two before I saw the results, too! Snape's character seems like he'll finally get put to rest because there've been multiple times in the books where it seems like he could have died before. And quite obviously from her interview, with the whole section where Rowling said that she wanted to keep from "other authors" to write books aftewards featuring the characters...that plainly said Harry for me.

Date: 2006-06-29 02:29 am (UTC)I also think there is the possibility of it being Hagrid or Mr. Weasley, mainly because any man that becomes a father figure to Harry, dies.

Date: 2006-06-29 06:50 am (UTC)I think J.K.R will kill most of the major characters so people won't pressure her for a sequal.
Lupin and Wormtail will die too probably. No point keeping the Marauders alive, unless of course Sirius isn't dead and he finally
declares his love for Lupin.no subject

And.... *sighs* what you says makes sense. But what kind of crappy ending would that be? I belive that a majority of people are rooting for Harry....
But let's face it. No one wants ANYONE to die. )':

Date: 2006-06-29 06:58 pm (UTC)I actually don't want to find out that he was acting out of good and yada yada. EVIIILLLLLL.
But if he does redeem himself, I hope Harry still hates him. and I hope he dies. because EVILLLL anyway! heh. Alan Rickman Snape is appealing, I admit, but that's not the REAL Snape, kthnx.
I voted for Bellatrix, though I'm not sure why. All I know is that if only one twin dies, and the other lives, the heartbreak it will cause... I shall cry, just as I did with Dumbles.

Date: 2006-06-30 12:16 am (UTC)If Harry doesn't die, Ron will. In general, If the main character lives, the sidekick/bff dies.
I can see Percy Weasley dying. It would cause so much angst because he was estranged and his family ends up regreting not remaining close to him.

Date: 2006-07-11 03:16 am (UTC)*sings* Percy Weasley, you're a... *ahem*
I never thought of Percy being one to die, though (as much as I'd enjoy it)... I can imagine him cowering in some corner of the Ministry, all alone...
heh heh heh...
Okay, time to stop now. I'm just setting things up. Percy can't help it, it's fate!! XD

Date: 2006-06-30 07:52 pm (UTC)Personally I hope Harry dies. I've despised him from the start. Snape musn't die! He caaaaaaaaaaaaan't! I hope Wormtail or Neville does though.

Date: 2006-06-30 09:37 pm (UTC)I also agree with one of the Weasleys going, I think one Weasley death would bring the family back together again. After all, Percy is isolated from them, but I don't want him to die since he's an interesting character. I'm thinking either Charlie (since Bill has something already) or one of the twins. Or the parents.
I just hope Snape doesn't die. He's the most in-depth and fleshed out character and one of the more complicated ones. He's awesome to read. And I seriously doubt Harry would die, since, once you boil everything down the series is a Children's series and the main character is who children identify/sympathesize with. Can't traumatize the children. D:
