Rowling to Kill Two in Final 'Potter' Book

Reuters
Monday, June 26, 2006; 3:52 PM

LONDON (Reuters) - Children's author J.K. Rowling has revealed that at least two characters will die in the seventh and final installment of her bestselling Harry Potter series, but was careful not to say who.

Children and adults are expected to rush and buy the final Harry Potter novel in their tens of millions when it is complete, and if the publication of the sixth book is anything to go by, secrecy surrounding the plot will be tight.

Rowling has already said that the final chapter of the seventh book was written long ago.

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly," she said in an interview broadcast on Monday on Britain's Channel 4. "One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die."

When asked to be more specific, she added: "No, I'm not going to commit myself, because I don't want the hate mail or anything else."

She did explain that she understood an author's desire to kill off the main character of a successful series.

"I've never been tempted to kill him (Harry) off before the end of book seven, because I always planned seven books and that's where I want to go.

"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks 'Well, I'm going to kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels ... so it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."

Rowling, 40, wrote the first Harry Potter adventure when she was an unemployed single mother, but has gone on to become one of the richest authors in history with a personal fortune estimated at more than $1 billion.

The Harry Potter series has sold an estimated 300 million copies worldwide.

You left off Voldemort!

I think both he and Harry will die at the end of Book 7. *nods sagely*

A Weasley has to go, there are about a hundred of them (slight exagerration...) I don't know who I think is going to go but I do know who I hope doesn't go. Namely Neville (although [livejournal.com profile] m0aning_myrt1e did make a good point about him dying), and Snape. I know a lot of people have said Snape is going to go, and I can't see him surviving, but just... no. Not Severus. Anyone but him. :P

Gah, my thought as well. I anticipate dead!Weasley. Possibly Molly or Arthur for extra angst. And because I am protecting Ron. Er... somehow.

My friends at work and I are going to start a pool when the book is closer to release. My money's on Snape (who must die to redeem himself because he SO IS NOT A DARK WIZARD) and Ron. I picked Ron for two reasons: 1. Everyone that has been of paramount importance to Harry has been killed (in order: Dad, Mum, Sirius, Dumbledore). The is almost no one left for him to lose... except a Weasley*. 2. There are SO MANY Wesleys, and they have gotten off WAY too lucky thus far, never having lost anyone in either Wizard War.

*Hagrid is alos a possibility in my mind for this reason.

ALSO! Is Voldie a given? And if so, does he count as one of the unlucky two? If he counts in JKR's mind, then we're only down to one guess.

It's going to be Snape. She's worked hard to make him ambiguous, and I just know she's going to have him redeem himself at the last second. Then, when everyone feels all warm and fuzzy about him (and maybe a bit guilty for doubting him), he'll sacrifice himself to save Harry or something and he'll go out a hero.

And I'll be forced to live out my days reading alternate universe fanfiction.

All I know is that if Neville, Lucius, Severus, Fred, or George dies, I swear I'll go into mourning. I have a bad feeling that I'm going to end up mourning... possibly throw my book at the foot of my bed like I did with the fifth one.

I've had a hunch since there was talk of a big death in Book 5 that Hagrid wouldn't survive to the end of the series, so his death wouldn't be a big shock to me. I agree that a Weasley may die, possibly Arthur or Molly. I wouldn't care if it was Percy though, since I can't stand Percy.

Now, if we were choosing who we -want- to see die, Wormtail would be on my list... as would Percy Weasley and Dolores Umbridge. ;) But alas, although I claim she lives in my head sometimes, I am not JKR.

My vote was for Ron because I completely agree with [livejournal.com profile] fightsactualfoo about how he's lost everyone close to him, but that's a little out there. There's 4 possibilities: Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, and Ginny (I count her).

I truly believe that it's going be Voldie and Harry though. Look at their odds: very slim of living together in harmony. There's the prophecies, the fact that they have the same blood in them so there must be some connection, and their wands. Not to mention the fact that they know what each other has gone through, except Harry was for the greater good, and Voldie turned to the dark side.

This is just like a puzzle that's missing that one peice and we won't find it until the release of the 7th book! And it's killing me!

I voted Bellatrix mostly out of hope that Neville will be able to avenge his parents' torture--BUT, since "there are things worse than death" has been such a prevailing theme, maybe she'll be finished off in a worse way after Neville decides, perhaps, that she's not worth it.

HOWEVER, if we're looking at deaths in relation to Harry, Ginny is a big possibility. So is Ron, but I think after this huge setup with R/Hr, it seems unlikely that JKR would end on that dreary of a note. Now, Ginny could fall into that category, but there's a lot of theory that lends intselfs to Ginny's death, looking at parallels drawn through the years in the Wizarding World.

Harry is a significant possibility as well, but even if he does "die", I doubt he'll stay dead. That's a theory of MINE, but I won't get into it here. :P

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] troughgirl1 with the whole "two unexpected deaths". I was actually talking with my friends the other day about this, weirdly enough, and we were saying how there are probably more deaths, it just so happened that there were two she didn't think of before.

And then one person isn't going to die? I have no clue. Maybe Wormtail...or possibly even Neville or something.

I just CAN NOT WAIT.

At this point my guess would be Snape and Ginny. Snape because Harry has hated him for so long, and then he did what he did in the last book (even if it *was* supposedly on Dumbledore's orders), I think he is going to redeem himself, but Harry won't be able to forgive him, and will end up killing him.

Ginny because it would add to the angst, but I will be right there along with everyone else crying NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!.

Well, the article said that two would die, did it not? The poll option only allows for one? I guess it wouldn't really matter in the end because by the way the poll is going about now, we have our guesses at the two already...lol

And I was going to pick those same two before I saw the results, too! Snape's character seems like he'll finally get put to rest because there've been multiple times in the books where it seems like he could have died before. And quite obviously from her interview, with the whole section where Rowling said that she wanted to keep from "other authors" to write books aftewards featuring the characters...that plainly said Harry for me.

Also, I remember an interview awhile back, JK told the Alan Rickman what would happen to Snape, a sneak preview if you will, and then this article says she's had the final chapter of the final book written for some time...hrmmmmmmm.

My guess will have to be Snape and Lupin. Severus will have to die to prove which side he's really on. Remus is the last Marauder, so it's his time to go and join his friends, as Peter for all intents and purposes is dead. They also are the last surviving members of their era.

I also think there is the possibility of it being Hagrid or Mr. Weasley, mainly because any man that becomes a father figure to Harry, dies.

my theory: the blair witch comes and kills them all! XD

lol, for real though, I have this awful, sinking feeling that we're going to lose Harry....and I shall weep for him *wipes at tear* :(

I'm pretty sure I'll rip my book apart if Severus and/or Lucius dies. I think Molly, Ron and Ginny should die. Never liked them much. Oh and Hagrid too. I actually hope that Voldemort doesn't die because of Harry; first Harry dies while trying to kill him, fails then Dumbledore suddenly walks into the battlefield and finishes Voldemort off, not knowing that somewhere, another fragment of his soul exists.

I think J.K.R will kill most of the major characters so people won't pressure her for a sequal.

Lupin and Wormtail will die too probably. No point keeping the Marauders alive, unless of course Sirius isn't dead and he finally declares his love for Lupin.

Honestly, I think that Draco's going to go. I was looking at a site that actually gave really good evidence of the book going that way. I forget what site it was otherwise I would post the link for all of you to look. It really made sense though with the evidence and such. It's like, Draco didn't do his job and chances are Voldemort's going to find out and kill him.

I dunno...for some odd reason I think Harry's still going to live.

I have a feeling that Harry will die. JKR said that she wanted to kill off characters so nobody would write about it after the seventh book, and there would be no sequels written by somebody other than her.

(I think of that horrible Gone with the Wind book sequel "Scarlett" and perhaps that's her reasoning behind it. Shudder. Bad sequels.)

I'm also a HATP fan!

And.... *sighs* what you says makes sense. But what kind of crappy ending would that be? I belive that a majority of people are rooting for Harry....

But let's face it. No one wants ANYONE to die. )':

I would just like to say, that until proven innocent, SNAPE IS SO FREAKING EVIL IN MY BOOK.

I actually don't want to find out that he was acting out of good and yada yada. EVIIILLLLLL.

But if he does redeem himself, I hope Harry still hates him. and I hope he dies. because EVILLLL anyway! heh. Alan Rickman Snape is appealing, I admit, but that's not the REAL Snape, kthnx.

I voted for Bellatrix, though I'm not sure why. All I know is that if only one twin dies, and the other lives, the heartbreak it will cause... I shall cry, just as I did with Dumbles.

I picked Harry, but that's mostly because I REALLY want Harry to die. It will redeem him as a character, because right now I don't find him all that appealing.

If Harry doesn't die, Ron will. In general, If the main character lives, the sidekick/bff dies.

I can see Percy Weasley dying. It would cause so much angst because he was estranged and his family ends up regreting not remaining close to him.

*pumps fist in the air* YES!!!

*sings* Percy Weasley, you're a... *ahem*

I never thought of Percy being one to die, though (as much as I'd enjoy it)... I can imagine him cowering in some corner of the Ministry, all alone...

heh heh heh...

Okay, time to stop now. I'm just setting things up. Percy can't help it, it's fate!! XD

I don't know, myself. Obviously Voldemort will have to die, but JKR will probably won't kill Harry off, in my opinion. It's too drastic and she has to remember that her audience isn't very old. Truthfully speaking though, she could kill Harry off in a very heroic way and leave with a happy ending, I guess.

Personally I hope Harry dies. I've despised him from the start. Snape musn't die! He caaaaaaaaaaaaan't! I hope Wormtail or Neville does though.

I think Lupin would go. MWPP, Prongs has gone, Padfoot has gone, next would be Wormtail and definitely Moony. At least, I'm hoping he dies. Wipe out the whole older generation and a clean set of dead Marauders.

I also agree with one of the Weasleys going, I think one Weasley death would bring the family back together again. After all, Percy is isolated from them, but I don't want him to die since he's an interesting character. I'm thinking either Charlie (since Bill has something already) or one of the twins. Or the parents.

I just hope Snape doesn't die. He's the most in-depth and fleshed out character and one of the more complicated ones. He's awesome to read. And I seriously doubt Harry would die, since, once you boil everything down the series is a Children's series and the main character is who children identify/sympathesize with. Can't traumatize the children. D:
