There is NO HP club at school, because high school is horrible. Quite heartbraking, no? There is a Tolkien Club, but no Potter club. So here's where you guys come in.

HI. I'm waving right now but you can't see. My name is Lindsey and I would very much like to change my school. So I decided that I will be president of the Harry Potter Club (of whose real official name, like S.P.E.W., is currently pending, because I am not good with that). I need your help.

What should our purpose be, and what should we do while we're there? Teachers need concrete reasons and educational/beneficial support behind everything. Here are my ideas :

- Creation (because we all love showing off our stuff, don't we) :
wands/robes
bookmarks
knit scarves (and for those who can't knit, join the Knitting Club.) (Yes, the school has one.)
fanmag (for the graphic-inclined. rumors, art, fanfiction, movie tidbits, author bio, book quotes etc.)
- Education
research the meaning behind the names and spells
- Participation
sorting
trivia
- Information
those conferences (The Witching Hour, Nimbus 2006)
shameless plugging of HiH (oh yes.)
Fanfiction Recs (Draco Veritas, Shoebox, ?)
discussions (an online lj community, perhaps)
- Of course, the REAL reason : Field Trips
Trip to IMax Theater for GoF
Potter Parties at hosting houses
- And Goodies, for when the year ends
Bertie Bott's
Chocolate Frogs (from Barnes&Noble = trading cards omg)
bookplates
bookmarks
trading cards

And yes, I went overboard, but you get the picture. I've been wanting to join one of these for so long but no one ever stepped up to it, so I decided to get my rear in gear and start something new. Something worthwhile. Something magical. Anyone have any ideas on things you would have liked to do/have done in a Harry Potter Live Community? It would be SO MUCH HELP. Thank you :D

I am in the new one at my college. Well, and treasurer. So far, we have had discussion and have sold tickets and are all going to see GOF the Monday we get back. We were thinking about having a Yule Ball, but that didn't work out.

We did the making scarfs, that was fun. So other ideas we came up with: movie marathon, wizard's chess with people, trivia nights, making HP recipes, and creat a lj group(which I did).

Those are just the things that were highlighted on out sheet. Also possibly fanfic contests in the groups. You could get together with the Tolkien club and talk about the similarities. We are talking with the Wiccans/Druids and the Classics Society about magic and Latin stuff.

So that is what we are having. At the moment, and we are still trying to think of others.

You can also find out if any of your local colleges are presenting papers/having seminar/offering one-shot courses relating to Harry Potter. Sometimes a professor will offer a public presentation about things such as Harry Potter and Christianity, Harry Potter and Philosophy, Morals in Harry Potter, etc. Something like that would be fun and educational.

You could also research mythological references in the books, and maybe have a go at comparing Harry to classic archetypal heroes (and additionally, Voldemort to the archetype villains).

I wish my college would do that.

They did quite a few at Boston University when I went there (especially after Goblet of Fire came out/the first movie came out). They were cool.

Usually they're like one-shot things, like an evening seminar or lecture one night or something, either open to the public or you have to sign up for. Generally speaking they're the kind of lectures that are advertised with flyers up everywhere, and people just show up.
