By la_loony hh_sugarquill By lotrangel17 Time for another edition of Writing With Hogwartsishome! In other words, what sort of fan fiction writing is going on right now at hh_sugarquill?! For those of you who caught it, sign-ups closed this weekend for the Term XXX Sugarquill Winter (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) Holiday Gift Exchange. If you made the sign up, be on the lookout today, Monday, for your assignment! You'll have until Sunday, December 14 to write and submit, then we get to see all the lovelies around Sunday, December 22. The current Writers' Block activity has a prompt of Makeover. You have until 19 November, 11:59pm UTC to submit a story. Remember, for Writers' Block, you only have to write between 100 and 500 words! So easy, so give it a try. Results for Elation will be posted soon so watch for those. Also for November, the Fic/Art Bingo post has been made. There are new cards — and a new theme — so be sure and check out the BINGO: Characters Edition. There are specific characters and generalized characters and a lot to choose from. AND Alice/superficiality of Slytherin has already started on her Bingo card! She posted two amazing sketches that you should take a look at!. As far as writing goes, there were a few stories posted. Sam/ pretty_panther of Ravenclaw posted a story called Toy Soldiers. This story, told from Professor McGonagall's point of view, is a great read. Here is a little snippet of the story: It is almost a relief when Potter reappears and brings the war to Hogwarts. Either way things will end. It is a hard decision to lock down the Castle and prepare to fight. Children may die, but death might be the better option than the nightmare they are living. The younger students she sends away but some of the older ones refuse to leave. She can't help but flashback two years to when she ended up hospitalized. She doesn't expect to survive. There were quite a few short stories written, like Once Upon A Halloween Past by Kristine/flipflop_diva of Hufflepuff. As well as Glorious Purposeby Bella/nicevenn of Slytherin, who also write a cute little poem called Brilliant, Sexy, Devious Quidditch Gloves! Avi/flyingharmony posted links to two stories she wrote for HP fests. Be sure and check out Alive and And Darkness I Became. There's a goodly bit of stuff ending before our next issue: Healers' Associations wants you to create a sick kit, comprised of a mood board with things that make you feel better when you're sick. If you haven't already gotten sick yet this season, it's time to prepare! (And maybe actually go buy that ginger ale and Tylenol when you next go out....) Bored of the topics on your essays? Potions Club wants you to write a 100-word drabble on your assigned potion. We're bored with our essays... and we're also kind of tired of having such horrible DADA professors all the time. DADA is therefore taking feedback on what you would teach if you were the DADA professor. Hopefully club feedback will improve our educations in the future! Muggle Cultural Society would like to move us away from concentrated schoolwork; instead, they'd like to get a TV debate going! By sapphoatsunset You might be overjoyed to learn that we’re back on the Darkside this week. Or perhaps you’re frightened. If you’re frightened, I have good news for you: only two more editions of this series before we move on to lighter topics! Fear not though, lovers of the darkside. We will revel in the darkside for another two editions of the Daily Prophet. May He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named smile down upon us (Kidding, I swear! Sorry, your columnist is in a bit of a humorous mood while typing this, though that humor is likely falling short, oops. :P) So, without further ado... Opposite Attract, or Do They? Aries & Libra You are Fire and Libra is Air, so of course you go together. After all, a fire cannot burn without oxygen. Librans find themselves so amused by the Aries temper and bossy nature, and of course, those of Aries wonder why anyone would look before they leap. That's why your inner opposites help to balance you both like good cop and bad cop. Taurus & Scorpio As Earth and Water signs respectively, you sure do get into a lot of muddy sticky situations. From mud slinging to voodoo dolls, your inner forces serve you well and force the rest of us to admit you’re both contenders in the larger battle for world domination. Gemini & Sagittarius Another Air and Fire pairing, there is a relationship here that is practically canonized. On the Light Side, it’s a bit like Pooh and Piglet. On the dark...well, it’s a bit more like Draco and his minions on steroids. Just watch out that your cold hearts don’t melt too much. You might ease up on the rest of us and lose your rep. Cancer & Capricorn And again for Water and Earth. Another muddy duo, though more tactical. That mud sure makes great defensive walls and holding cells for prisoners, doesn’t it? Watch out though. If you get too defensive and all-knowing, you’ll become hard-boiled and soulless and the only jobs left for that type are with the IRS. *yawn* Leo & Aquarius Fire and Air again, with the Fire providing rage, histrionics, and orders for public floggings, and the Air cooling said rage just enough to let you both sleep at night. Or, you didn’t think the cool Aquarius could rage? Well, it’s all the help of fiery Leo who makes Aquarius have such a high bitch rating if you remember from a few editions ago. You foes obviously deserved it. Virgo & Pisces Ah, our last muddy pairing. One such a neat freak and the other possessing the attention span of a mayfly. Luckily, between you both, Virgos can occasionally let loose, and Pisceans can stay focused long enough to actually get something done once in a while. :P Until next time! There are some adorable badges to be had for voting and any of the other activities. Check out the Trophy Cabinet over here. It's not required to have your own animagus form to participate in any of the Wilderness activities, but there are always bonus points to be had. If you haven't participated in a while, you might want to check HERE to make sure that you are still registered, and if you have been taken off the list but want to reclaim your animal, just go HERE. If you no longer feel connected to your form (and have had it for six months or more), then you can submit an essay stating why in order to be able to apply for a new form; once you're approved, you can submit a new application anytime. Speaking of applications, anyone interested in becoming a registered animagus need only fill out their application (you have to have The Standard Book of Spells Vol 1-3 from Flourish and Blotts too, but that's easy stuff). Foul Potions Play A little birdie told an unnamed Ravenclaw that two students were helping each other cheat on Potions exams! One of the culprits is rumored to be a Gryffindor and the other a Slytherin. But who is helping who, we wonder? Overheard - Shhh A certain Hufflepuff house ghost overheard some rather questionable activity last week in the Gryffindor dormitories. When you try to ask her about it the only words she can manage are "there was just so much cake." Playing Ghosts Rumor has it the spirits of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are doing a lot more than haunting and playing pranks these days. And a few first years have been traumatized by seeing them engage in activities definitely not meant for young eyes. As for us? We didn't even know it was possible for ghosts to do that. Got gossip? What do you think is the story behind the shop name? Carola/carola_d: I think this is a very Slytherin name! To the point and creating a need, like good publicists. It’s a very literal name: “You need my tags, so come into my shop and order” Nic/rosy_nic: I think the name comes from the need of things! Chelsea/interchanges: I'm going to guess a reference to the novel by Stephen King? 2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite? Carola/carola_d: I love the quote tags and the landscapes ones. I love this quote because I say this multiple times, and people find it funny that I am that honest. So I feel identify with this tag, and I love the font and texture used; it's a really good combination. It reminds me of Madge Undersee, who is my favorite character from Hunger Games (or what I imagine her to be thanks to fanfics because she is the most underused character ever). So in my head, it's actually her. I like the chosen image. The lights and the change in focus make a really beautiful tag. Nic/rosy_nic: I love the simplistic nature of this, plus i'm a massive coffee lover so I like it. I like the colouring of this tag, plus the text works with it. I like the simpleness of this tag. The colours and the text look good too. Chelsea/interchanges: I like the choice of image and font positioning here. I love the tagline of "kills with weapons of cuteness" because that's what the image is doing to me. Love the coloring here! 3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper? Carola/carola_d: I love the tags with the textures and quotes, so I would like for her to make quotes from other movies/tv series and with different textures. Nic/rosy_nic: I would like to see more of the fandom tags, as well as more pretty stock. Chelsea/interchanges: It would be nice to see some fandom tags. I see from the quote tags that Eve likes GOTG and I'd love some GOTG tags. What is the story behind your shop's name? Eve/renovatio_lucis: My shop name is taken from the Stephen King book, Needful Things. In the book, there is a shop with the same name, which opens in a small town, and its residents become invariably addicted to purchasing things from the shop because everyone seems to find exactly what they've desired most in it. :) 1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name? Carola/carola_d: I love the name of the shop, but I don’t know what could be the story behind it. I like how it sounds, so maybe she just saw it written somewhere and thought: “That would be a cool name for the shop!” I am very curious to read her explanation! Nic/rosy_nic: I think the story behind the name is something relaxing that we only get when we have a few minutes to spare Eve/renovatio_lucis: The name seems to imply that the shop has to do with short, instant gratification — something that will make you happy for a moment but then might fade away. If viewed in a positive light, which I think it should be, I think the shopowner wants to basically brighten people's days with something pretty. 2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite? Carola/carola_d: First, he is HOT. Besides that, I think the coloring is gorgeous on this one, and I love that we can’t see his whole face. I like tags where the focal point is positioned at the sides and the image is cut. I love tags with illustrations, and these three birds are too cute. I like how colorful this tag is! I love charmander and this image is so beautiful and simple. Nic/rosy_nic: I love the bear in this tag with the clouds. It's just fun. I like this tag with the flower blossom, as it's very pretty. I like this tag. It has a good mix of colours, and the text matches the background of the stock image. Eve/renovatio_lucis: 3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper? Carola/carola_d: She has a lot of variety, so it’s difficult to say. Maybe some more tags similar in structure to the Outlander tag that I mentioned above, playing with the colors and the position of the images. Nic/rosy_nic: I would like to see a few more stock tags, as the ones that are there are very pretty. A few more would not go a miss. Eve/renovatio_lucis: I'm loving the cats theme, so I'd be happy to see more of that! Maybe some other cute animals too? What is the story behind your shop's name? Chelsea/interchanges: It's the title of a song off of Symphony Soldier, the second album of my favorite band, The Cab. 1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name? Carola/carola_d: Memory is very selective, we remember the pieces of art and the moments of our life that meant something and forget about the ones that didn’t affect us in any way. If we love something, we will always remember it, so I think memory and our particular tastes always go together. Eve/renovatio_lucis: I think the owner is trying to invoke a sense of nostalgia, youth, childhood — a happier, better time, which is how we often see our own memories. :) Chelsea/interchanges: I'm going to guess it's a reference to the song Memory Lane by McFly because I know Nic likes them. 2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite? Carola/carola_d: When I see this tag, it transports me to that part of the movie, and then I feel sad (but the good kind!). I think it’s a pretty and sentimental tag. I love the image she chose, the red flowers and the soldier, it feels ironic to me (natural beauty and war). I love stripes and textures, and this tag is fun, simple and cute. The city that never sleeps. If you like New York, you like this tag because it represents the city perfectly — fast, colorful, even stressful. Eve/renovatio_lucis: Chelsea/interchanges: I like the coloring here and how the font matches the image. I like the textured background around the image of the patronus and the font choice here. It's pretty! 3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper? Carola/carola_d: I prefer tags that are bigger in width than height (300x170, for example), so I would love to see more tags with these proportions from her and some tags with illustrations, cartoons or animated movies images because I can’t get enough of those. Eve/renovatio_lucis: I would love to see more stock photography, mostly because I love it so much myself. :) Chelsea/interchanges: More The Musketeers tags because no other shop has them XD What is the story behind your shop's name? Nic/rosy_nic: The name for the shop comes from the McFly song on their second album, called 'Memory Lane,' which I was listening to at the time of brainstorming for a name to call the shop that I was going to start, so I chose it and have not looked back since. 1. What do you think is the story behind the shop name? Eve/renovatio_lucis: Well, we obviously have a fan of Donnie Darko here. :) Nic/rosy_nic: I think the story behind the shop name is from a movie, but I'm not sure which. Chelsea/interchanges: Well there's a quote at the top of the catalog about it being a beautiful combination of words, so I guess Carola likes how it sounds? 2. Which three tags in the shop are your favorite? Eve/renovatio_lucis: Nic/rosy_nic: I like this tag, as it has the focus on the character not the text, plus it's a great insight to the artistry of Disney. I like this tag, with the sections of the character posters together, although a better box could have been chosen for the font. I like the comedy aspect of this tag with the multiple Batmans, doing a song or audition for the role. Chelsea/interchanges: I like how the text is perfectly in between the two images and how one image floats off the tag. I'm not usually a fan of eye-less images, but I think it works really well here and the text positioning fits with it. I like the font choice and size here and how she made it pop on the black & white background. 3. What kind of tags would you love to see from the shopkeeper? Eve/renovatio_lucis: I'd love to see more stock photography! Nic/rosy_nic: I would like to see something other in the shop along with the fandom, so a mix of stock or text quotes would balance out the mainly fandom catalog. Chelsea/interchanges: I like how she's done the Disney concept art tags, so more of those (not sure about image availability though). I'd also like to see what Carola does with stock, as she doesn't have any yet. What is the story behind your shop's name? Carola/carola_d: That's easy. I know some members already know where the name comes from because they've commented on it. Only two words: Donnie Darko, which is my favorite movie. "Cellar Door" is mentioned by Drew Barrymore in the movie: "This famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that Cellar Door is the most beautiful". Besides that, a door is a portal between different worlds, you never know what you're going to find behind it until you open the door. I think it's a mystical element with a lot of symbology... and you should never go alone into a cellar, specially if you live in a horror movie. ~~~ This has been the Flourish Column.
