I HAVE A QUESTION.

And, since this is an HP community and my question is HP related, I am asking it here.

:)

Me and Bunny were discussing the privaledges given to the Headboy/Headgirl. Mainly for hihnow_playing (WHICH YOU SHOULD JOIN IF YOU ARE TOTALLY A LOVER OF RP AND NOT IN IT ALREADY *hem hem*). We've found lots of things about their duties.. like making rounds at night to insure that the place is safe, having use of the prefect bathrooms, etc. But it's kinda hard to find that sort of information online. And, I mean, forgive me if this is HP blasphemy or what have you, but I really don't want to re-read the entire series just to notate down what JK said the Headboy/Headgirl got.

Soooo.. do any of you guys know what all they have to do/get?

Also, am I mistaken, or do they have to stay in a rooms outside of the typical four-person dorm rooms? What with the rounds to make at night and all. Bun and I kept thinking they do, but then again, we're not sure if thats something we read in fanfiction or not. XD

ANYWAY, SO LET'S DISCUSS IT. Headboy/Headgirl privvies/responsibilities.

I think the personal bedroom is something you've read in fanfiction. Percy came down into the common room just like everyone else in book 3...

Well, yeah, I know that much. But I meant like.. within the tower itself. Like, four people to a room, but then there's a seperate one for the headboy/headgirl if they happen to be in that house that year or what have you. You know?

That would seem redudant to me in the artitecture of the school. But then again, we've never heard anything about any of the other dorm rooms besides Harry's -- or maybe we have and I'm confusing that with fanfiction.

Headboy/girl are pretty much in charge of acclaimating the First Years, and they obviously get more information than most students do.


I'm in the process of re-reading some of the books, so I'll comment again with more, im sure.

I've assumed that things are the same at Hogwarts as they are in the typical schools in Britain. So far, I've seen a lot of simularities and all, but I really don't know how things work there anyway.

Actually, the typical room is five people. Harry has five people in his dorm, including him. Ron, Nevill, Dean and Seamus all share a room with Harry.

And Head Boy/Girl seem to do much the same things as Prefects at Hogwarts. They also get a Head Boy or Head Girl badge. *has one for her Halloween costume*

You know, there is a lot of information about prefects, but not about Headboy/girl. Like is there one for each house, or is there just one headboy and one headgirl for the whole school? I am sure they get the same privileges as the prefects, such as the bathroom (I would so be a prefect just for the bathroom) and the private car on the Hogwarts Express, but what about everything else? The prefects take the first years around, etc., so what is the job of the heads? Are they just supervisors or something? This is a really interesting topic and I am glad you brought it up.

And there are only one headboy and one headgirl in the school. But what would I know? :)

Sortta off topic, but i just started Highschool, and this morning, me and my friend were so ammused when across the announcements we hear "For those of you who want to apply for the position of a Prefect" We squeed! lol i never knew they had those in Canada!

I don't know about duties and such, but from what JKR has said, two prefects are chosen from each house's fifth year students and they remain prefects for years 5-7. Of those Prefects, one boy and one girl from the whole school are chosen as Head Boy and Girl. Usually, I believe, the Head Boy and Girl are 7th year students.

As far as if they get special quarters and the like, I am not sure. It's clear the prefects only get the special bathroom as Ron and Hermione have the same rooms in book 6 it seems like. I suppose if either of them makes Head Boy/Girl in book 7, we'll learn more, but then again, from the end of book 6, we might not actually see a year 7 at Hogwarts, so who knows. Someone should email JKR and ask her how it works :P

I know I've read a fic where Hermione was head girl and only had one roommate (who was quite conveniently Ginny).

Yes, but we also know that you don't have to be a prefect to be made Head Boy/Girl, as Remus was the Gryffindor prefect for his year, but James was made Head Boy in their 7th year.

When Percy was Head Boy, he still lived in Gryffindor Tower, right?

Yeah, it is a bit unclear. With our Head Boy/Girl at school, they went to governors' meetings and chaired student committees etc, but they didn't involve them in discipline or anything.

It was very handy being the best friend of the Head Girl, though. All of the perks with none of the responsibilities ;)

I really don't think that they get their own rooms... Just because I can't see Jo Wanting to seperate the head boy and head girl from their peers (*cough*HermioneiftheygobacktoHogwarts*cough*)
