"Welcome, my champions..." says a voice, speaking in a low, almost haunting voice. You find yourself in a room smelling of jasmine, matchsticks, and stale tea. In front of you sits an older woman. Trelawney, you think to yourself. Not exactly the person I had hoped to see outside of class... She pushes a pair of large glasses up her nose, then motions for you to sit next to her. "...your challenge is one of great difficulty. One must See with their Inner Eye the messages sent to them while in slumber. Open your Eyes- take in the Thoughts and Sights and Sounds, feel them, see them. Dreams carry a multitude of messages that only ones with The Gift may fully embrace.. but, I suppose you could as well.

"Your challenge is to correctly identify at least five points of interpretations in the following three dreams, and list them, giving the name of the person/place/thing and what, in dreamspeak, it means. Then, in a paragraph of at least three sentences, say what you believe the interpretations are leading the dreamer to believe. You may begin."

***

1. You open your eyes. The world around you is covered in shades of beige, as if peering into a world through a filtre of coffee. You instantly feel as if it is the middle of autumn, with dead leaves fluttering through the air and a bit of a bite in the wind. Women and men pass by you on the streets, trench coats pulled up tightly to leave little more than a face uncovered, and handle you with cruel disregard. You sigh and start on your way. With no clue where you are going, you walk.. but almost feel compelled to travel north. Out of nowhere, an ape appears at your side, takes you by the hand, and starts to lead you down a dark, haunting path. Once you've come to a stop, you are overwhelmed with the feeling that, despite the fact that you've never seen it before, this is your family home- in shambles. Windows are broken out and covered in loose plywood, the door hangs off it's hinges, and all in all, it looks like it has seen far better days.

2. You are walking around as normal in the house of where your best friend and his family lives. No matter what you say or do, you get the feeling that they are specifically ignoring you. Your best friend walks in and you have a rather mediocre conversation with him. His brother walks in and asks him who he are talking to. It is then that you realise that you are actually dead and it is actually your ghost walking around. The only person who can see you is your best friend. You look away, confused, sad, hurt, and worried. Just then, a cat jumps in through the window.

Then the dream changes and all of your friends and loved ones are walking around as zombies. They have the white face, the sharp teeth, the haunted expressions on their faces. They are obviously also dead. You are still a ghost but the zombies keep on hunting you down, making attempts on your life. In the end, you find yourself boxed up in a room with them all surrounding you.

And then you wake up.

3. You are sitting on the porch of a tree house overlooking the jungle. The view is breathtaking- tall trees stretch up higher than you could even see, birds flit through the air, and somewhere far down below you.. what feels like miles and miles below you is the jungle ground, coated in the softest moss and flowers. You sit back, propping yourself up with your arms and take in a deep breath.

It is then that you look to your right. Sitting next to you is a monkey. He, too, is watching the view quietly. He doesn't move, just sits. You watch him in complete and total curiosity- what is this monkey doing here?, you wonder. You then notice a grouping of bumblebees floating about right to the monkey's side. Then you look to your left. A huge lion sits at your other side. He is calm, reserved, serene, and regal. You feel compelled to touch him, but know you shouldn't. Slowly, he turns his head and looks directly at you. You feel no fear.

***

Trelawney gives you an evaluating stare, then folds hands as if in prayer. "Mind you, this is to be done alone. One cannot See with the Inner Eye when glancing through another's spectacles. You may, however, have assistance in proof-reading. But nothing more. And trust me.. I can tell if this rule is broken."

Dream 1:
Colour: Beige - neutral and unbiased, needing the basics
Trench coats - Protective and defensive personas, unknown danger
Ape - deception, mischievous, falsehood, or a need to calm down
Travelling north - reality, moving forward in life.
House in shambles - chaos, choices self destructive

Dream one is leading the dreamer to believe that they need to calm down, and figure out where they are going in life. The colour beige is telling them that they need to learn the basics, and that there are a lot of people who are defensive around them. The ape signifies that they need to calm down, and though they want to move forward in life, they can't until they realize that their own choices are self destructive. They must make proper decisions to really get ahead.

Dream 2:
Being ignored - not paying enough attention to yourself, real experiences of being ignored by that person
Your own ghost - feeling of disconnection from life
Cat jumps in window - misfortune and bad luck
Zombies - detached from people, feeling dead inside
Trapped in a room - confined and restricted in an aspect of life

Dream two is telling the dreamer that they are not focusing on their life as much as they should. Dreaming about themselves as a ghost shows that they feel they are disconnected from their surroundings, and the zombies show the detachment. They are confined and restricted in a part of their life, and the dream is trying to tell them that they need to figure out what it is so they can move on and stop feeling like they are having bad luck. That way, they can once again feel free to do as they wish.

Dream 3:
Tree house in jungle - trying to escape your waking problems
Monkey - means that you have a playful side to your personality, or you are immature
Bumblebees - distress and coming problems
Huge lion - great strength, influence over others
Jungle - aspects of yourself inhibited

Dream three is about trying to escape their inhibitions and be the playful person with strength that they can be. By being in a tree house, it shows that they want to escape their every day problems and not worry about whatever is distressing them, even though they're right there. They want to be playful and they have strength which can influence others, but they are not using it right. If they got rid of their inhibitions, they would be able to use this to their advantage.

1) Beige- neutrality and detachment.
Autumn- changes and transformations
Ape- warns dreamer to beware, protects
Path- changing your course of action
House- honor and dignity

The dreamer's honor is destroyed by something. The dreamer was warned of this. The dreamer needs to change something in their life and what they're doing, and stop being neutral to restore this honor once more.

2)Walking- freedom, movement
Friend- joy and consolation
Ghost- memory, past coming back
Cat- represting enemies
Zombies- death

The dreamer is happy with their life, but are hoping that things from the past will resurface again. They have control. But if this happens, their enemies will be angry, and the dreamer will be killed in some aspect, say emotionally.

3)Jungle- unexplored, discovery
Monkey- misleading friends
Bees- activity, happiness in life
Lion- pride, valuable friendship

Didn't get to finish, sorry.

Continued...

Calm- tranquility, feel centered

The dreamer is looking for friendship. At first they found unloyal friends, who were happy and busy with their lives, because of the unloyalty. Then the dreamer moved on and found loyal friends, and now finally the dreamer feels content with their realtionships.

The first thing to be noted about any dream should be its mood. This may feedback onto the major symbols therein, and thus affect the overall interpretation of the dream. It is clear, therefore, that the mood in this particular dream is rather dour - given the season in which it occurs, the cold indifference of the passers by, the haunted path, and the dilapidated home. These all, in turn, have their own meanings to contribute to the dream's interpretation.

  1. Autumn - The season in which this dream occurs is very clear; from the colours and the fallen leaves, to the chill and the disposition of the passers by. Autumn is a season of transformation and the changing of one's surroundings. It may also relate to the gaining of property as a direct result of another's toil.

  2. Cruel Disregard - This is indicative of the fact that the dreamer may be ignoring a part of themselves that may need attention. The fact that they can only see the faces of these people also suggests that they may be unhappy with a part of themselves, and thus prone to ignore it.

  3. North - The dreamer is compelled to travel in this direction, which in itself is said to relate to reality.

  4. Ape - To dream of an ape is often a warning sign - they are symbols of deceit.

  5. Path - The path in this case is dark and haunted. This suggests that the dreamer should give attention to the direction in which they are headed, and consider the consequences of any of their actions in recent times.

  6. Home - The home in the dream state signifies a persons basic needs and security. The fact that the house is in such a state may reflect a feeling of violation, or perhaps a part of oneself that is trying to make itself known. It may also represent past modes of thinking and feeling, and the fact that these may be beginning to resurface. Thus, one must be on guard and may need to update these mode of thinking.

Some very clear inferences can be made from this dream. North suggests the reality of the problem, and the probability that it requires immediate attention. The disregard of the people, their faces and the dilapidated home all point toward the fact that a part of the dreamer that my have been purposely ignored is in need of attention. The ape may relate to self deception. These may bring with them the resurfacing of old ideas. It is therefore pivotal that, as both the home and path suggest, the dreamer pays attention to the way they are headed, their thoughts, and their actions. Autumn, in this case, may address the transformation back to old ways. It could point to happier changes, but the dour mood of the scene may suggest the former. The mood itself is indicative of the problem as a whole, and the fact that it needs attention as it is bringing the dreamer down.

This dream feels very lonely, detached and distant. In each part the dreamer is isolated by their own physical ‘form’, and is made aware of this by the actions (or lack thereof) of others.

  1. House - The dreamer is made aware of the fact that they are in the home of a friend. Houses in dreams are often representative of the self; one’s being. Haunted houses tend to represent unfinished business, and while the dreamer is doing the haunting in this case, and not being haunted, this may still apply. Perhaps it is the reverse.

  2. Ignore - The dreamer has a strong sense of being ignored while in the home. This may relate to the fact that the dreamer is not paying enough attention to a part of themselves, or may literally relate to the feeling of being ignored by others.

  3. Ghost - Ghosts can have multiple meanings in the dream world. They can relate to the spiritual aspect of the dreamer; their past coming back to haunt them; and other more general fears. They can also suggest that something is out of reach, or that the dreamer is feeling disconnected from the world around them.

  4. Cat - Cats generally signify misfortune, but to the cat lover they can signify independence and power.

  5. Zombie - Dreaming of zombies can suggest a feeling of detachment from others around you - both in a physical and emotional setting. It can also indicate a feeling of hollowness and automation in one's daily life.

  6. Trapped - To dream of being trapped generally suggests that the dreamer is feeling confined in a section their life.

The main theme throughout this dream appears to be isolation. The dreamer is already isolated from the other beings in their dream by being of a different form (a ghost among humans and zombies). The fact that they feel ignored early on strengthens this, and seems to relate directly to feeling ignored and detached in their waking life. Again, being a ghost can suggest one’s disconnection from the people and world around them, as does the presence of the zombies. Feeling trapped and confined could also relate to this isolation – perhaps it is imposed by the actions of others? It is clear, however, that the dreamer feels alone. The house, representing the self, may also aid to strengthen this interpretation – as the individual is feeling isolated, even in an inhabited home. The cat represents misfortune, which only adds to the dire situation the dreamer appears to be in. They need to find the source of their isolation and attempt to correct it.

The mood of this dream is undeniably calm - sitting up high surveying a vast and colourful landscape; surrounded by animals that are themselves at peace.

  1. Tree House - Dreaming of being inside a tree house often suggests that one is trying to escape from problems that may be affecting waking life. The altitude and isolation relate to such an escape.

  2. Monkey - Monkey's symbolise deception at the hands of others trying to advance their own interests. They may also symbolise the cheekier side of the dreamer, however, depending upon the situation.

  3. Bumblebees - Bumblebees are a bit of a paradox really, they can symbolise coming problems that may cause significant distress. Bees themselves, however, can be seen as 'busy' and denote industrious work and harmony.

  4. Lion - Lions are associated with strength, nobility and pride. They often indicate that the dreamer will overcome difficulties and sway others; opposition shouldn't be a problem.

  5. Calm - Both the overall feeling of the dream, and the disposition of the animals and the dreamer, is incredibly calm. This indicates contentment and satisfaction in the dreamers lot in life.

The meaning of this dream is somewhat jumbled - there appears to be a bit of rivalry and subsequent escapism, but also a certain amount of triumph, contentment and calm. Perhaps the dreamer is in a situation in life in which they encounter significant opposition. This would be indicated by the deception of the monkey and the problems of the bumblebees. They are therefore seeking an escape in the treehouse. But the overall calm of the situation, and the presense of the lion, is suggestive of the fact that they will overcome their opposition and secure their place, which will leave them content. It seems as if things are going to be all right in the end.

Dream 1:

beige: the basics, the essentials, the barest form; unbiased/neutral
autumn: unpleasantness ahead
trench coats: protectiveness/defensiveness
traveling North: making progress, moving forward
ape: deception, mischief
home: signifies basic needs, security, values
old, rundown house: represents old values/beliefs; may need to update way of thinking
broken windows: misery, disloyalty

On the whole, this dream does not feel positive for the dreamer. The dreamer is holding onto past values which were once quite important to the dreamer; however, someone or something [represented by the ape] is leading the dreamer towards what may feel like "progress" [the old, rundown home] but may not necessarily be. The dreamer feels protective of the beliefs and values brought to him/her by family and past, but an outside influence is trying to change these beliefs and push the dreamer towards a new way of thinking, leading the dreamer to feel disloyal to his/her own upbringing.

Dream 2:

self as a ghost: feeling of detachment, out of touch
own death: a release from worries or recovery from illness
cat: indicates treachery from those trusted; also independance
jumping through a window: an unexpected way to overcome problems
friends/family as zombies: drudgery of daily life

The dreamer may feel that their friends or family do not understand them, and that these other people are simply a responsibility to deal with each day. As the cat jumps through the window, it symbolizes the dreamer becoming more independant. This newfound independance is used to overcome problems in a new way and release the dreamer from his/her real-life worries.

Dream 3:

treehouse: trying to escape daily problems/real life
jungle: dreamer feels his/her personality is inhibited
tall trees: new growth, hopes, desires; strength/stability; self-development
flying birds: joy, ecstasy, harmony, balance, love
mosses: slow progress
flowers: perfection, spirituality; love, joy, happiness
monkeys: playful attitude or mischievious side; others are deceitful to advance their interests
right (direction): conflict between desires and principles
lion: power, strength, aggression; overcoming difficulty and emotions; pride and leadership
left (direction): passive; unconscious/repressed thoughts and emotions

The dreamer feels that happiness is just out of reach (the birds are overhead, the trees are tall, the flowers are far below), but he/she is trying to escape reality to find it. On his/her own [in the treehouse], the dreamer is torn between his/her playful side and more aggressive side. While the dreamer may try to be playful and fun, this is not his/her true personality. The dreamer is repressing his/her leadership and power, however, he/she has nothing to fear from coming forward and taking a stand.

1.
- Beige colour: Beige is a light brown, a colour that incorporates all the other colours and their meanings. The sepia tone can also represent the past, old things and feeling too old for your years.
- House and home: Where you live symbolises a large part of yourself, because of the fact that you do - or have - lived there. A house in shambles reflects feelings about your life being torn up and/or in shambles. Revisiting old family homes also brings up the revisiting of old issues that one has faced before.
- Ape: Animals represent a more primal and instinctive side of the dreamer. An ape is very human-like in many ways, but is still an animal. They have strong family and territorial instincts, which is perhaps a reason they led the dreamer to the family home.
- Path: Paths and roads represent one's path in life, down which we must travel. It represents a need of the dreamer to walk this path in waking life, and to deal with what lays at the end.
- The other people: People in dreams are reflections of aspects of the dreamer's self. This people are turning away and cold, symbolizing that the dreamer is ignoring many parts of her personality, perhaps for so long that it will be hard to reach them once again.

A dream like this is obviously telling its dreamer that something is Wrong. Life is muddled. The dreamer's own emotions have been put aside or ignored. But there are more primal instincts driving him towards home and confrontation of these problems.

2.
- Death: Rarely prophetic, death in dreams represents change. Your own death represents a major life upheaval. Whether this upheaval is expected to lead to better or worse things depends on the dreamer's own attitude towards death. One terrified of death will expect this upheaval to lead to dire consequences; one who sees death as another phase of life will be moving towards better things.
- Cats: Cats mean many things, including magic (both good and bad), feminity, sexuality, intution, finickiness, and friendship. If one has negative feelings towards cats, they are likely to represent a part of yourself that you do not want to acknowledge exists.
- Zombies: These symbolise frozen emotions and out-of-control feelings. A group of zombies shows a group of related fears eating away at your brain. They are relentless until dealt with, but it is very difficult to do so.
- Trapped: You feel trapped by your emotions and outside pressures interacting, and are unable to escape.
- Friends: Your best friend continues to see you, proving that you know he will always be there for you. But then he turns into a zombie with the rest, symbolising that you're not as certain of his friendship as you'd like to think.

There is a lot of change going on in this dreamer's life and he doesn't want to acknowledge how it is impacting him emotional. Until he does so, he can't be at peace with the choices he has made. He is very afraid that the people he loves will not continue to love him once these changes are done.

3.
- Porch: Symbolisings being on the threshold of doing something, and leaving a place (physical or emotional) where you are comfortable.
- Lion: Lions are generally ferocious, representing anger. A calm lion can represent someone who is at peace with the fact that they get angry.
- Bees: Fertility and renewable are represented by calm dreams of bees. Frantic bees are something "bugging" you. If something is currently bothering the dreamer, it isn't something he will panic over.
- Monkey: Animals represent a more primal and instinctive side of the dreamer. A monkey is very human-like in many ways, but is still an animal. He is watching you like you are in a zoo, but the calmness means that both the primal and the higher minds are at peace.
- Treehouse: Trees, especially tall and majestic like jungle trees, represent the higher life and god. Having built a house in trees represents making your life in those areas.

This is a dream of contentment, telling the dreamer that they have made the right choices with their life. This person is at peace with their emotions and life. It is likely to be a spiritual peace, found with religion or a strong awareness of self.
