HP fic

I've never been one for fanfic (other than the wonderful CBB, of course!) but I clicked a link to Blood Magic, as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana and as such have spent the past 100 hours reading it through. It's very good. The male characters have a worrying disposition to acting like an Oscar Wilde-type fop, and there's underlying sexual tensions between just about everyone but the developing relationship between Snape and Harry is well done.

So now I've finished reading that (and encouraging you to read it too!) I need something else to fill it's place! Something long, and something good please, no Mary-Sue's or bad writing!

Do you slash or not?

Well then, I'll take a dig through my het and gen links.

First of all, there's the HFA, or Hogwarts Fanfiction Academy. Done in the tradition of OFUM from LotR, it's the tale of a group of hapless fanfic writers who are sent to a version of Hogwarts where the characters teach them about canon. It's wonderfully done, and a sequel is currently in progress.

Meir Brin's FF.N page (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/265516/)

In the same vein, the Harry Potter Division of the PPC(Protectors of the Plot Continuum) by Polaris and Aria. A more...direct approach to dealing with Sues.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/924957/1/

Not exactly fanfiction, but darned funny are McTabby's Summary Executions (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=mctabby&keyword=Summary+Executions&filter=all). She finds the worst summaries out there, posts 'em in batches, and lets the comments roll in. Warning: do not read while drinking, it will come out your nose sooner or later.

For something that's not as metaficcy as those, I really rec A Nick In Time (http://inkstain.inkquill.com/isf/archive/25/anick.html) by Tira Nog. The sequel is slash, but the first is really a bit more gen, and has one of the best Ron/Hermione I've seen. Basically, Snape and Harry are both knocked back into childhood. Age seven, to be exact. No memories beyond that, and Ron and Hermione take them in while they're trying to figure out how to put them back. It's just...well, it's long and well done.

Hope these are of some help.

These are all by [livejournal.com profile] amberdulen:

The Scarlet Raven (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1696035/1/)--This fic parallels OotP, but focuses mainly on Percy as a sort of Scarlet Pimpernel-like hero, and I thought it was really cute. There's some good Percy/Penelope moments too.

The Serpents' Society (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/572522/1/)--This is the first of four novel-length fanfics dealing with a secret society of Slytherins. The fics parallel the books and are very accurate in terms of canon. They focus on OCs mostly, but I think they're very well done.

After The End (http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=619&chapno=1). Hopefully you haven't already read it, but if you haven't you MUST. It's the best fanfic I've ever read.

Plus it's really, really long. : )

Thanks to you, I have been non-stop reading it instead of studying for my exam.

While Hermione would tsk you, I personally thank you :)

Hee, I discovered it last winter right in the throes of final papers. Instead of writing annotated bibliographies and 10-page research papers, I was reading. So I know all about how difficult it is to tear yourself away. : )

Oh, if you haven't already, you must read Maya's fics (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Maya/). They're sheer brilliance and her Draco is the Best. Draco. Ever.

Draco Malfoy, the Amazing Bouncing... Rat? (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Maya/Amazing_Bouncing_Rat/) is "eventually D/Hr, just now mainly D/coffee..." and hilarious. Underwater Light (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Maya/Underwater_Light/) is darker (though still very funny) and H/D pre-slash (at least in the beginning) and is quite possibly the best HP fic I've ever read. It's a WIP but there's 19 really long chapters that should keep you busy until Maya updates again ;P

Go forth and read!

If you want some examples of Mary Sues, there are a couple places to look. [livejournal.com profile] pottersues reports a HP Sue everyday. [livejournal.com profile] deleterius and [livejournal.com profile] marysues are both communities for Sue reports, but there are lots more for different fandoms (marysues is multi-fandom, deleterius is HP/LOTR).

It's really not hard to find Mary Sues in the HP fandom. Just open up the HP section at ff.net and you'll find several thousand.

I rec this fic: http://oojahs.snoo.org/stealingharry/stealingharry.htm It's a what-if fic about what happens had Sirius NOT been sent to prison. It's very well written and quite long. The sequal (which takes the story into the books) is currently a WIP but the story is beautifully written. There is slash between Sirus and Remus...but there are kid friendly versions of the chapters where sex is actually written if that happens to be too much for you.

Other then that...all the stories I have links to are WIP/Slash/Dark!Harry. If Dark!Harry fics are wanted just let me know...most of them are well written and Dark doesn't always mean evil.

I feel the need to stick with BNF reccomendations here, because there's a reason they became BNFs in the first place.

Lori's Paradigm of Uncertainty series (Hero With a Thousand Faces is a WIP).

A Sirius Affair by Carole and Penny, and A Sirius Change, by Carole, which parallels Paradigm of Uncertainty, but focuses more on minor characters.

Harry Potter and the Psychic Serpant series by Barb. I don't like what she did in the last one, but they're still good stories.

The Draco Trilogy, by Cassandra Claire. The ultimate in BNFs, you either love this series or you hate this series. There is no in between.

Also, if you like the Mauraders, the Shoebox Project is a must read. http://www.livejournal.com/community/shoebox_project/

All fics except the Shoebox Project can be found at Schnoogle dot com. Enjoy. =)

Big Name Fan. Basically the big writers within fandom. 9/10ths of people you ask will know who they are. People love to loathe them. It's lots of fandom fun.

If you've never read it, get to Stealing Harry (http://oojahs.snoo.org/stealingharry/stealingharry.htm) . To quote the author's description:
What would happen if Lucius Malfoy got to Peter before Sirius did?
And if Sirius followed his godson, forbidden to do more than watch him from a distance?
Until, one day, Harry found Padfoot...
Meet an eight-year-old Harry Potter, a Sirius Black who never went to Azkaban, a Remus Lupin with a steady income, a Severus Snape who can't help liking his archnemesis' son, and a Peter Pettigrew who thinks he could be the next Voldemort...

You'll have the option of staying with kid friendly (kf) chapters, or venturing into some Remus/Sirius slash. You don't lose any plot if you skip the slash. This is truly a first-rate fic; I'm trying to get my husband to read HP just so he can read Stealing Harry and its' sequels. I can't recommend this highly enough.

There's lots more from this author - and yes, he's good enough that I think of him as an author. Follow the links at the bottom of the Stealing Harry page to get to some short stories between the end of SH and the beginning of the Hogwarts Years. Then, start on the parallel universe Hogwarts Years novels - the first one is done, and the second one is in progress; they're called Laocoon's Children (sp?).

Just out of curiousity, did you read the slash parts or skip them?
