I'm x-posting this in a couple different places, so if you see it more than once, please forgive.

It's come to my attention at one of the many icon journals I frequent, there is an icon stealer hanging out over at xanga. Her link is http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=xxiconsxx Several of these are actually hotlinked directly from LJ users' own icons which is why a lot of red X's appear. I know many people she has been hotlinking and stealing from have renamed their icons and even some have put rather funny banners/icons up in their place. But I just wanted to warn anyone who didn't know and to see if any of these belong to them.
WARNING: crappy music ahead (plus a bit too much of flashy pink junk)

Well, if you do a graphic and you don't want it stolen, don't put it on the internet. There's ALWAYS going to be people snagging things left and right, that's just the way it work right now.

Is that really something to bother posting about here?

There are SO many places on xanga like that, its because on xanga you dont have keywords to credit people with so people dont care about hotlinking, or who made icons, or anything..

Gee that sure was a painful experience. Need to go throw up now.

I finally decided, after several pages of severe pain, that she can steal my icons if she wants, just as long as I'm not forced to visit that atrocity again.

Yes, it is something to bother posting about. It is that way and it shouldn't be. Not caring that people snag without credit only leads to frustated talent not making them anymore. It might not be important to you, but to those of us who spend valuble time on our work, it matters.

Um, where do you draw the line? If you write an essay and put it on your website, if you write fan fiction or original fiction and put it up on the 'net, are those free for the taking, too? Copyright law sez no. The minute you put something up on the Internet, it's considered publishing, and anything you publish is copyrighted to you, not to every loser on the stree. Same thing goes for icons. Obviously, a lot of icons reuse already-copyrighted images from movies, TV shows and the like, but the effort that goes into creating them still should be recognised.

Not only that, but if stealing is going to happen, even if you can't help it... when they do it by hotlinking it will kill your bandwidth allowance, especially on the free sites, which means potentially your stuff will all be temporarily shut down/suspended for going over your limit through no fault of your own, which isn't very fair.

Alright, everyone I didn't mean to cause a fuss.

I certainly DON'T support stealing icons or other graphics... I wouldn't use another person's icon without crediting, but a ton of people out there would, and I'm not out to change their minds or anything.

I'm a graphic artist myself, and I know, as other people in the business know that if you put stuff on the 'net you've got to expect that someone somewhere will steal it. Anything I put up, I make sure it's something that's a throw-away, something that I've made and that I don't care if other people take.

*sigh* I will not fight about this, I just wanted to make it clear that I'm not a supporter of stealing icons.

I was simply attempting to point out an off-topic post, and questioning whether it had anything to do with the community at all.

I've seen a few links to Xanga about icon stealers. Honestly, I'm one of those icon makers who would love credit but I know that people aren't going to do it, so it's not necessary. However, someone making it appear as though they actually made them ticks me off. ><

Thanks for linking! :)
